Although Czech authorities widely tolerate the use of U.S. driving licenses, the law states that all Americans whose permanent stay in the Czech Republic will exceed three months should also have an International Driving License. An international license is required for some neighboring countries; it is recommended that all drivers obtain one before coming to post. International licenses can be obtained by mail through AAA. In December 2002 the People’s National Movement (PNM) formed a government under PM Manning. This ended a year long standoff between the PNM and the United National Congress (UNC) after the previous election ended in an 18-18 Parliamentary split and all attempts at a compromise government failed. The PNM was founded in 1958 under the leadership of Dr. Eric Williams. Dr. Williams in 1962 became the first Prime Minister of the newly independent country, continuing in office until his death in 1981. In 1986 the PNM was swept out of office by the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), led by A.N.R. Robinson. In 1991, the PNM returned to power only to be defeated in 1995 by the UNC, in coalition with the small National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) party.
