Resale values and demands for imported cars has been good, but is declining.  Departing personnel have thus far not encountered problems selling their cars (except LHD), though they are no longer commanding top prices.  Continuing trade liberalization of import rules is narrowing the price gap between locally-purchased and imported cars, even those imported duty-free.  To avoid paying import duty & taxes on re-sale, cars purchased duty and tax free must have been registered in country for two or more years, and the owner must have been in the country for two years, or the car must be sold to another person with duty-free privileges.  Consequently, personnel with 2-year assignments may find it difficult to sell their vehicles upon departure.   (See “Customs and Duties” for the Embassy's policy on personally owned vehicles.) ...
