The United States supports the "founding mothers" of the new democracies in Afghanistan and Iraq. Two courageous patriots, Afghanistan's Minister of Women's Affairs Massouda Jalal and Iraq's Minister of Women's Affairs Narmin Othman, will be guests at Department of State and USAID events surrounding International Women's Day celebrations in Washington, D.C., March 8. US Department Of State Post Report

The Embassy has two boats with outboard motors available for rental. The Mussulo Peninsula has nice beaches off the main coast, just a short boat ride from the city. Several pristine and uncrowded beaches further south are accessible by road. Sport fishing is also popular, and the waters just off the coast have an abundant supply of many types of game fish. Anthropology and natural history museums are found downtown. There is a historic fort overlooking the bay. EMBASSY LATEST WARDEN MESSAGE ON THE HEMORRHAGIC FEVER IN UIGE PROVINCE, ANGOLA

As of May 17, 2005, there are no new case of Marburg hemorrhagic fever in Luanda, Cabinda, Kwanza Sul, Kwanza Norte and Malange provinces. There are no reports of people contracting the disease in those provinces, as well as there are no active cases now reported in those regions. In Uige province, 3 new cases and 2 deaths were reported within Uige city. In Damba, Songo, Negage, Puri and Maquela do Zombo municipalities no new case was reported. USAID is now focusing on helping internally displaced people, along with de-mobilized soldiers and their families, return to their villages to produce their own food. In addition, food aid and other assistance are being provided to vulnerable Angolans to meet their subsistence needs, since they are currently unable to meet their food security needs from their own sources. ...

For almost thirty years Angola was engaged in a civil war that wrought incalculable human suffering, chronic insecurity, collapsed infrastructure, extreme poverty, and degradation of all basic social services. Of 173 countries, Angola ranks 161 in the human development index calculated annually by the U.N. Development Program. Average life expectancy is 45 years; 60 percent of the population lives below the poverty line; nearly half (45 percent) of Angolan children suffer from chronic malnutrition; and at 250 per 1,000 live births, the under five mortality rate is one of the highest in the world. Of the almost 8 million Angolans who are poor, more than 4 million depend on some form of humanitarian assistance to cover their most basic requirements.
