Angola Restaurant

US Department Of State Post Report

Windhoek has a number of restaurants that are good and inexpensive. Many restaurants are steak houses or otherwise meat oriented, and there is a limited range of international cuisine beyond Italian and Chinese. Restaurant meals generally cost about $10–$20 per person. Some restaurants include standard German cuisine on their menus, while others offer more exotic game entrees (e.g., ostrich, kudu, oryx, springbok). A gourmet restaurant situated in an early 1900s castle is reputed to be the best, and is certainly the most expensive, in town. An Italian restaurant/pizza parlor within walking distance of the Embassy is a popular lunch and dinner venue among the American community. Kentucky Fried Chicken is the only American fast food franchise operating in Windhoek, although several South African fast food chains are present as well. Social Activities ... [Read More]

IS THAT REALLY A RESTAURANT? ...

Numerous influences have affected the development of cuisine in the United States. Native Americans are credited with making corn a major ingredient in the national diet. Early immigrants from China and Italy, as well as slaves from Africa, all contributed to the development of foods that Americans commonly eat today. The absence of royalty, a motivating force for culinary inventiveness in other countries, coupled with the "stoic, utilitarian sensibility" of the Puritan Ethic, may have hindered development of fine cuisine during the country's early decades, but adoption and adaptation of dishes brought by new waves of immigrants over the decades have sparked a richness and diversity in the fare on America's dinner tables and in its restaurants. ... A report published during the year by the University of Minho's Children Studies Institute noted that although child laborers in factories were common 5 years ago, efforts by government and NGO programs have almost eliminated this problem. The report said that inspections of workplaces have increased, and that fewer children have been found working. Also, school attendance has increased, with dropout rates at approximately 2 percent. However, the study noted that children continued to work in family settings, seasonal agriculture, and the restaurant and tourism industries. The extensive national network designed to combat child labor shifted some of its resources toward these businesses. ... [Read More]

V. Country Narratives -- Countries A through G

Cuba is a source country for children trafficked internally for the purposes of sexual exploitation and forced child labor. Trafficking victims from all over Cuba are exploited in major cities and tourist resorts. There are no reliable estimates available on the extent of trafficking in the country; however, children in prostitution is widely apparent, even to casual observers. These children are sometimes trafficked into prostitution by their families and exploited by foreign tourists. Anecdotal evidence suggests that workers at state-run hotels, travel company employees, taxicab drivers, bar and restaurant workers, and law enforcement personnel are complicit in the commercial sexual exploitation of minors. Cuban forced labor victims include children coerced into working in conditions of involunt ... [Read More]
