US Department Of State Post Report

Banc D'Arguin National Park: is a 4-5 hour drive north of Nouakchott along the beach at low tide and is a large, natural estuary rich in bird and animal life. The park is reputed to be one of Africa's best for watching migratory birds such as pelicans, flamingoes, and egrets. Big sea turtles, dolphins and huge fish have been reported to swim around rocks at the foot of the cliffs. A tour guide is advised for this trip, and a sailboat ride is recommended. ... [Read More]

Remarks to The Africa Policy Advisory Panel Conference

When Walter and I were on one of our trips to Africa, we went to Gabon and we visited one of these parks that had been set aside by President Bongo. We set aside 10 percent of his whole country into these preserves. Walter arranged for me to go out into the bush and see some of the animals and to admire the fauna and flora and whatnot, and everything was going great until my security people went out in the jungle in front of me. And by the time I got there because of all of the armed individuals running around and the helicopters circling there wasn't an animal within 500 miles. (Laughter.) So I saw some trees, but I didn't even see a mosquito. I have very, very good security. (Laughter.) ... [Read More]

On-The-Record Briefing on Sudan

MR. CASEY: Afternoon, everyone. Welcome back to our next briefing for the day. As I think all of you know, U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Natsios is here with us today. He is recently returned from a trip from Sudan, looking at the broad range of issues with that country, but very specifically about the crisis in Darfur. We wanted to give him an opportunity to talk to you today about his trip and about the general situation in the region and the country. With him as well is Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Michael Ranneberger. And, with that, let me turn this podium over to Administrator Natsios, and hope we have a good briefing. Thank you. ADMINISTRATOR NATSIOS: Thank you very much. I went, actually, to four countries --the Congo, then to Burundi, then to Kenya and then to Sudan -- and we looked at the reconstruction ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: USAID Helps Restore Iraqi Marshlands Destroyed by Saddam

A veterinary team began working in the villages of the marshlands in the autumn of 2004. According to the villagers, this was the first time in memory that veterinarians had checked and vaccinated their animals. The program’s veterinarians have inoculated more than 14,000 animals so far, Reiss said. ...

Reiss said the marsh restoration program includes numerous agricultural projects aimed at providing the returning Mad’an with a livelihood. These include: restoring destroyed date palm groves; introducing better varieties of wheat and new crops of sorghum and broad beans; improving animal-husbandry practices, alfalfa production and veterinary services to boost dairy production; and restocking high-value, indigenous fish to replenish depleted supplies. ...
