US Department Of State Post Report Banc D'Arguin National Park: is a 4-5 hour drive north of Nouakchott along the beach at low tide and is a large, natural estuary rich in bird and animal life. The park is reputed to be one of Africa's best for watching migratory birds such as pelicans, flamingoes, and egrets. Remarks to The Africa Policy Advisory Panel Conference When Walter and I were on one of our trips to Africa, we went to Gabon and we visited one of these parks that had been set aside by President Bongo. We set aside 10 percent of his whole country into these preserves. Walter arranged for me to go out into the bush and see some of the animals and to admire the fauna and flora and whatnot, and everything was going great until my security people went out in the jungle in front of me. And by the time I got there because of all of the armed individuals running around and the helicopters circling there wasn't an animal within 500 miles. (Laughter.) He is recently returned from a trip from Sudan, looking at the broad range of issues with that country, but very specifically about the crisis in Darfur. According to the villagers, this was the first time in memory that veterinarians had checked and vaccinated their animals. The program’s veterinarians have inoculated more than 14,000 animals so far, Reiss said. ...
