On-The-Record Briefing on Sudan

MR. CASEY: Afternoon, everyone. Welcome back to our next briefing for the day. As I think all of you know, U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Natsios is here with us today. He is recently returned from a trip from Sudan, looking at the broad range of issues with that country, but very specifically about the crisis in Darfur. We wanted to give him an opportunity to talk to you today about his trip and about the general situation in the region and the country. With him as well is Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Michael Ranneberger. And, with that, let me turn this podium over to Administrator Natsios, and hope we have a good briefing. Thank you. ADMINISTRATOR NATSIOS: Thank you very much. I went, actually, to four countries --the Congo, then to Burundi, then to Kenya and then to Sudan -- and we looked at the reconstruction ... [Read More]

US Department Of State Post Report

The Societé Nationale Industrielle et Miniére (SNIM), a parastatal corporation that controls the country's iron mines, was established in 1972 when a French mining company was nationalized. Sound management of SNIM and good ore quality make mining the most important sector of the economy. SNIM has consistently supported geological exploration in view of renewing or increasing its ore reserves.  SNIM's sales forecast is a yearly yield rate of production of 12 million tons of both naturally high-grade iron ore, as well as, low-grade iron ore. These ore reserves are estimated at more than 5,700 million tons are located around the mining city of Zouerate. SNIM is taking advantage of its wide expertise in mining exploration in order to carry out various projects that will contribute widely to the country's economic development.  For example, in 1998, SNIM obtained exploration permits in different localities and started prospecting for diamonds, gold, base metals and dimension ston ... Department of State Washington File: USAID Helps Restore Iraqi Marshlands Destroyed by Saddam

Reiss said the marsh restoration program includes numerous agricultural projects aimed at providing the returning Mad’an with a livelihood. These include: restoring destroyed date palm groves; introducing better varieties of wheat and new crops of sorghum and broad beans; improving animal-husbandry practices, alfalfa production and veterinary services to boost dairy production; and restocking high-value, indigenous fish to replenish depleted supplies. ...

A veterinary team began working in the villages of the marshlands in the autumn of 2004. According to the villagers, this was the first time in memory that veterinarians had checked and vaccinated their animals. The program’s veterinarians have inoculated more than 14,000 animals so far, Reiss said. ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: Text: Two Agencies Helping Countries Control Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The IAEA/FAO Joint Division has been assisting developing countries to diagnose and control FMD, through coordinated research and technical cooperation projects involving countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Over the past decade, two research projects involving eight countries in Latin America and 10 countries in Southeast Asia led to the development of immunoassay tests for diagnosing the disease. They further helped to upgrade national capacities for using the tests effectively to confirm and control or stamp out outbreaks. In the case of Latin America, a regional capacity to produce FMD virus diagnostic kits also was established. Recently, a third research project was initiated involving 14 laboratories, in Latin America and Southeast Asia, as well as one laboratory in South Africa, to develop and validate tests which will enable veterinary authorities to differentiate vaccinated from infected livestock. ...
