US Department Of State Post Report

Soccer is the national sport. Soccer is played mostly outdoors or in stadiums. The Embassy has its own soccer team that practices weekly and has participated in a yearly diplomatic community soccer tournament. BIS and TISA offer after school soccer programs, as well as programs in other sports depending on interest and the skills of teaching staff and organizer-volunteers. ...

The school term is from early-September to mid-June. The curriculum includes English, mathematics, cultural studies, science, art, music, physical education, and Azeri, French, and Russian as foreign languages. Soccer, ballet, and other activities are available after school. ... [Read More]

USIS Washington File: TRANSCRIPT: CLINTON ADDRESS TO THE NATION ON NATO AIR STRIKES

We learned some of the same lessons in Bosnia just a few years ago. The world did not act early enough to stop that war, either. And let's not forget what happened -- innocent people herded into concentration camps, children gunned down by snipers on their way to school, soccer fields and parks turned into cemeteries; a quarter of a million people killed, not because of anything they have done, but because of who they were. Two million Bosnians became refugees. This was genocide in the heart of Europe -- not in 1945, but in 1995. Not in some grainy newsreel from our parents' and grandparents' time, but in our own time, testing our humanity and our resolve. ... [Read More]

Country Narratives -- Countries A through G

The national task force used the African Union Day of the Child and National Children’s Day to highlight the dangers of child trafficking and child labor. Elected government officials are actively involved with efforts to raise awareness of trafficking and have organized sensitization meetings on trafficking with opinion leaders, chiefs, and village elders. The government funds ten percent of an international program to eliminate the worst forms of child labor. It also sponsors radio and television public service announcements against trafficking and distributes handbills on trafficking to transport owners and local officials. The Ghana National Drama Company uses nationally recognized stars in a television drama to further sensitization on cultural practices that encourage trafficking. The government uses a World Bank loan package to directly assist street children. The government has established a Needy Child Fund to reach 50 children in each of 110 districts. The government is using ... [Read More]

2004 Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Greece

On September 4, an Albanian immigrant was stabbed to death and approximately 20 others were injured during clashes across the country following a soccer game between the two countries. The Government condemned the incidents; police arrested one person in connection with the stabbing, who was awaiting trial at year's end. Immigrant associations denounced racist violence in the country and charged that police had not intervened to arrest far-right extremists. ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: Transcript: State Department Noon Briefing, November 12

MR. BOUCHER: The Embassy is open today. The Embassy continues to keep in close touch with the American community. At this point, there are no reports of violence against Americans. The situation on the ground in Abidjan is improving with traffic moving along the streets; however, President Gbagbo has called for a gathering tomorrow at the main soccer stadium in downtown Abidjan with the goal of mourning those killed in recent violence, and we certainly urge and hope that those who attend this gathering will refrain from violence. ... USIS Washington File: TRANSCRIPT: STATE DEPARTMENT NOON BRIEFING, JUNE 19 -- CORRECTED

MR. RUBIN: It's certainly concrete in the exchange area to have sporting events of interest, like the soccer match is of interest to peoples in Iran and Europe and in the United States, and the President's decision to talk about that match as part of the process of developing greater understandings between our two peoples is part of this "civilizational dialogue." But I think both we and the Iranian Government have talked about concrete actions in terms of - we have, very clearly - in terms of state sponsorship for terrorism, in terms of weapons of mass destruction, in terms of other steps, and they obviously see steps that we've taken in the economic sanctions areas as what they are looking for. ... U.S. Commitment to Women in Europe and Eurasia

Management Training. In April 2003, a delegation from the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Kosovo undertook a week-long Voluntary Visitor program in New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. on how to organize, recruit, fund, and manage girls/women’s sports teams--specifically soccer--and the role that government, business, and private citizens play in managing and funding sports leagues. With very few organized sports teams for youth and none for girls, the officials hope to promote sports as a beneficial activity for girls. The development of sports programs for women and girls can have a positive effect on women’s lives.   ... [Read More]

USIS Washington File: TRANSCRIPT: NATO BRIEFING ON "OPERATION ALLIED FORCE" APRIL 6

The third category is detentions. We know that many, many men of military age have disappeared, they have been systematically separated from other groups. Many of the refugees arriving at the borders have been women and children. We don't know the numbers of the lost generation, as it were, of young males in Kosovo. It could be anything from tens of thousands to a hundred thousand plus. But we do know, particularly from human rights groups, that have meticulously researched this in the last few days, that there have been important disappearances from the Malevso area. And we have reports from many refugees of detention centres being set up in the soccer stadium at Pec or the sports complex at Pristina. There are even reports of Kosovar women also being detained. Again, I have to come back to the question I asked a few days ago, and to which we still don't have a reply, "what has happened to all of these men?" ... [Read More]
