Belgian authorities are continuing their investigations of several individuals arrested in 2001 who are of interest to the United States. Nizar Trabelsi, a Tunisian national arrested by Belgian authorities in September 2001 for his involvement with a plot to bomb the US Embassy in Paris, claimed in June 2002 that his plan was to attack Kleine Brogel airbase in Belgium. The Ambassador’s residence has an asphalt tennis court available to Embassy personnel during specified hours.  The few local tennis courts are cement and not in good repair.  The Chateau Linza hotel on the outskirts of the city has swimming facilities, which may be used for a fee.  Walking and running in the park around Tirana’s artificial lake is a popular activity among both Albanians and internationals.  A few private fitness clubs are now in operation in Tirana.  The Embassy housing compound also has a playground equipped for children, and a fitness facility provided by the marine detachment. The Sheraton hotel has a health club with membership available to the Embassy community, which includes both indoor and out door pools. ... [Read More]

COUNTRY DESCRIPTION:  Albania is a parliamentary democracy that is slowly transforming its economy into a market-oriented system.  Albania's per capita income is among the lowest in Europe, but economic conditions in the country are steadily improving.  Tourist facilities are not highly developed in much of the country, and though Albania's economic integration into European Union markets is slowly underway, many of the goods and services taken for granted in other European countries are not yet available.  Hotel accommodations are limited outside of major cities.  Read the Department of State Background Notes on Albania at http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3235.htm for additional information. ...
