Department of State Washington File: Text: U.S. Agriculture Department Sends Food, Funding to Afghanistan

The food commodities will be provided under USDA's Section 416(b) donation program. The projects will be conducted by the UN World Food Program and private voluntary organizations that understand the situation in Afghanistan. ...

Between FY 1999 and 2001, the United States provided more than 570,000 metric tons of food assistance to the Afghan people, most of it wheat, in addition to other humanitarian assistance. Over 80 percent of the total commodity tonnage was provided under USDA donation programs. The new donation will bring the total value of USDA donations to Afghanistan since FY 1999 to nearly $220 million. U.S. food aid has helped avert widespread famine in a country where millions of people suffer from three years of severe drought and large-scale dislocations. ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: Excerpt: World Food Program Increases Aid Deliveries to Afghanistan

The World Food Program continues to dispatch a record amount of food into Afghanistan during the month of December. WFP has now sent nearly 80,000 tons of food into Afghanistan in December -- enough to feed more than 9.6 million people for one month. Obviously, we don't need to feed 9.6 million Afghans every month, but a large part of this food stock will be pre-positioned in the hard-to-reach, mountainous areas where a food ration of six months may be needed. ...

Kandahar continues to be an inaccessible region for WFP due to high insecurity in the region. The WFP warehouse and offices were looted and destroyed, so we are currently looking for suitable warehouse in the area. Staff, food and trucks are ready to move into Kandahar as soon as the security situation allows. There are more than 238,000 people in the region who may be vulnerable and food insecure. ... Department of State Washington File: Excerpt: U.N. Briefing on Food Deliveries in Afghanistan, Nov. 3

--But that's not all, if we've got the logistics; we need to have enough food flowing to deliver. To speed this process up, WFP is buying bulk quantities of the food in the region, including Iran and Kazakhstan, and tomorrow (Sunday), 2 huge bagging machines will be flown in from WFP's Djibouti operation to Turkemenabad. This means we can bring in bulk wheat and bag it insitu and load it immediately onto trucks, enabling us to take it more quickly and efficiently to the north and north west of Afghanistan. Turkmenabad will become a major hub as it has road links to transport food to the north and north west of the country as well as rail and road networks to Tajikistan which allows WFP to get into the northeast. . . . ... Department of State Washington File: Text: U.N. Food Agency Warns of Famine in Afghanistan

Rome, 25 October 2001 -- The deepening food crisis in Afghanistan is threatening Afghans with mass starvation, according a special report released today by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. The report warns that the food supply situation in countries bordering Afghanistan is also seriously undermined by a prolonged drought. "This year's food production in Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan has suffered a significant reduction due to serious drought. The unfavorable food supply situation, which has prompted emergency food assistance in some of these countries, therefore gives little comfort to millions of displaced and resident Afghans who in the past could meet part of their food needs with supplies from neighboring countries." ... Department of State Washington File: Text: U.N. Seeks $10.1 Million for Afghanistan Food Assistance

For several years, FAO, the World Food Programme and NGOs have successfully collaborated in a food-for-seed programme in Afghanistan, by which improved seed varieties were multiplied by contract farmers in exchange for flour. FAO and WFP have agreed already to continue this programme. ...

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is seeking $10.1 million from donor nations for emergency food assistance to Afghanistan. ...

Rome, 29 November -- Helping farmers and refugees to resume food production and return to their farms will be the key challenge in the next months in war-torn Afghanistan, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said today, launching a $US 10.1 million appeal to enable it to resume immediate emergency assistance and provide seeds, fertilisers, feed and vaccines for animals. The appeal is part of a wider UN effort to alert the international community to the need for assistance to Afghanistan. ... [Read More]

Afghanistan (04/05)

The main source of income in the country is agriculture, and during its good years, Afghanistan produces enough food and food products to provide for the people, as well as to create a surplus for export. The major food crops produced are: corn, rice, barley, wheat, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. In Afghanistan, industry is also based on agriculture, and pastoral raw materials. The major industrial crops are: cotton, tobacco, madder, castor beans, and sugar beets. The Afghan economy continues to be overwhelmingly agricultural, despite the fact that only 12% of its total land area is arable and less than 6% currently is cultivated. Agricultural production is constrained by an almost total dependence on erratic winter snows and spring rains for water; irrigation is primitive. Relatively little use is made of machines, chemical fertilizer, or pesticides. ... [Read More]
