Department of State Washington File: Transcript: Rice Highlights U.S. Strategy to Defeat Terrorism, Proliferation

Under President Bush's leadership, the world is taking new action against this old threat. We are working with the international community to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Thanks in large part to the President's unwillingness to sweep this problem under the rug and his patient yet persistent diplomacy, countries around the world are keeping the pressure on Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program. And Iran is feeling that pressure, as evidenced by its recent announcement that it will sign the Additional Protocol for the IAEA and suspend its enrichment activities. While we will only be able to judge Iran's compliance by its actions, the firm stand of the United States against proliferation has clearly established a broad consensus that the international community must be proactive in countering this growing threat. ... Findings from Pakistan show, most notably, for example, that organized labor played a significant role in the democracy movements that helped to end military rule in the late 1960’s and 1980’s. And today, the declining textile towns of Faislabad, Gujranwala, and Jhang are the main recruitment centers for known sectarian organizations in Pakistan. Professor Candland said job creation would "pull the rug out from under these anti-democratic forces." ... [Read More]

Laura Bush Urges Literacy Efforts, Expanded Rights for Women - US Department of State

Today, Afghan women are relishing their new freedom. More than two million little girls are back in school. Women are heading back to the classrooms themselves, and as teachers. And with new business training, Afghan women are turning ancient crafts like rug-making into income-producing ventures. ...

Tomorrow I'll visit a Discovery School with Queen Rania and talk with the young people who are the future of Jordan. A hopeful and peaceful future for all children is a priority of the King and Queen -- and for President Bush and me. Queen Rania has spoken eloquently about the "hope gap." Too many children in my own country experience it. I'm working on an initiative to prevent young boys and girls from joining gangs or choosing a life of crime and drugs. ... [Read More]

Women in War and Reconstruction: The U.S. Commitment to Women in Afghanistan and Iraq

A few examples: Several U.S. companies, both large and small, have donated computer equipment and training for Afghan women. Other American firms have organized collections to support microcredits for aspiring Afghan women entrepreneurs. One of the members of our Council, the head of PBS, is offering them mentoring programs in TV journalism and production, and broadcasting their documentaries - which I can tell you are incredibly moving. A leading U.S. businesswoman is spearheading a rug export project for Afghan women; the project is called Arzu, which means "hope" in the Dari language of Afghanistan. Another member of our Council, active in a major foundation, has contributed toward exchange programs for Afghan women lawyers and judges, so that they can continue to play their part in creating a free society. Right here in southern California, a dynamic Afghan-American woman named Fary Moini has worked with her Rotary Club to set up a school for hundreds of needy kids in the Afghan ci ... [Read More]

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush's Trip to Afghanistan

But I think in terms of the women in Afghanistan, I have to tell you my overall impression -- and again, I was lucky, I got to go out a week ahead of time so I got to meet with women. I got to see some of our U.S. Government-funded projects and schools. I have to tell you that the women in Afghanistan, in general, are moving ahead by leaps and bounds. Two years ago, I remember the delegation visited a widow's bakery and, of course, that was a monumental achievement for these women running this bakery. Last year, we talked about a rug project, and now Connie Duckworth's Arzu rug project is doing phenomenal business. Handicrafts are now for sale. ... [Read More]
