Daily Press Briefing for November 10 -- Transcript

MR. BOUCHER: Well, there's a lot of things there. As far as the situation on the ground, the torture and slaughterhouses, I've just seen the news start to appear. That's something that our troops on the ground and that the Iraqis on the ground are going to address far better than I ever could, so I'll leave that to them; same with the terms of the status of the forces that are out there. ... Embassy of the United States in Manila

Ambassador: I’d be glad to comment on that. First of all, when people around the world think of traveling to a country what do they do? Do they look at our web site for travel advisories? I hope so because that’s good. We try to put out flat factual information. But what they also look at is Google, Yahoo, or other search engines. When they punch in “Philippines,” they’ll get this (holds up newspaper), they’ll get headlines from your newspapers. Things I never said will pop up in the headlines, making the Philippines look like a more dangerous place than it is. The U.S. Government puts out travel advisories and I urge your viewers to check them out. They are flat, factual, balanced statements. And in the case of the Philippines, there’s an American Ambassador who was eager to come back to this country. I go every time I can to ... [Read More]

Remarks at Town Hall Meeting

But there also are regional media in places that I would like to be able to speak to and I've had one regional media roundtable since I've been here and I'll try to do others, because people read their local newspapers and they listen to their local news. And so, I absolutely take your point. Getting out and talking to the American public, particularly now, in a time when we have asked America to make (inaudible) our diplomats to make sacrifices, in some cases the supreme sacrifice. I mean, we've lost some good people from this Department in some pretty tough environments over the last several years and Americans need to understand why we're doing what we're doing. So, thank you for the question. You couldn't be more right. (Applause.) ... [Read More]

U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy Meeting: Chinese Views of the United States

Mr. Chen Weihua: As a media practitioner, I believe the media probably should take the blame sometimes because often times we think the news media in America treats China very negatively. The nature of journalism is that they usually tend to focus on scandal, crisis, and other negative things but its very risky when ordinary people depend on this kind of information to understand a country, to understand China. Often times you meet people who have never been to China and when they talk about Americans working in China they always say "They better be careful. They could be arrested there any time for no reason." That is not true of China today, but that is kind of a reflection of American understanding of China. We have a lot of problems in some places but it is not Hell. For the same reason I think you have seen the news media in China change dramatically in the last twenty years with so many more newspapers and publications than before. They learn things from their American cou ... [Read More]
