He said it remained to be seen who they are and how senior their positions, "and I'm not inclined to get into it at the moment." ... Department of State Washington File: Defense Department Report, April 22: Philippines, Afghanistan Myers said the United States also is participating in a three-week joint military exercise on the island of Luzon in the northern Philippines. He said the joint exercise involves 2,700 U.S. military forces and 2,900 Philippine armed forces in missions to improve Philippine defenses and bolster that nation's ability to participate in peacekeeping operations. Department of State Washington File: Defense Department Report, Monday, May 20: Afghanistan, Iraq Marine Corps Lieutenant General Gregory Newbold, who briefed with Clarke, said that in the most recent incident the West Virginia National Guardsman died of a gunshot wound after his mounted patrol came under hostile fire in eastern Afghanistan. The engagement, which also wounded an Afghan soldier, involved "a quick exchange of fire," the director of operations for the Joint Staff said.
