APOD: 2003 March 13 - WIRO at Jupiter
Explanation: Gazing out over the mountaintops from the WyomingInfraRed Observatory (WIRO), astronomers recentlyrecorded this bizarre looking image of the solar system's rulingplanet, gasgiant Jupiter .The false-color picture is a composite of images taken to testa sophisticated digital camera operating at liquid helium temperatures and sensitive to wavelengths about three times longer than visible red light. At those infraredwavelengths (near 2.1 microns) the molecular hydrogen and methane gas in Jupiter's dense lower atmospherestrongly absorb sunlight, so the normally bright, banded planet looks very dark. But particles and haze over the equator and poles rise abovethe absorbing layers into Jupiter's stratosphere andreflect the infrared sunlight .Also clearly extending into the Jovian stratosphere is thefamous GreatRed Spot seen here in yellow just under theequatorial band at the right.North is up in this view and Jupiter's rapid 10 hour rotationwill soon carry the Great Re ... Geringer Comments on Reardon Resignation
"We need to pull together. John Reardon volunteered to take himself out of the picture because he didn't want to lose the progress the Council has made. I challenge all those who sounded any voice of opposition to get back on the team. Wyoming's young people deserve a better chance at success. Wyoming's families deserve a higher level of income. The Business Council has set the process and brought the people to enable us to achieve those goals. Now it's your turn, Wyoming." ... [Read More]

Geringer Protests United Express Withdrawal
Since 1986, United Airlines has experienced an ongoing problem of maintaining a consistent United Express presence at DIA. At a time when all major airlines and most regional commuters are profitable, something seems to be wrong with the Mesa/United Express picture at DIA. I’ve met personally with the President of Mesa, Rolly Bergeson to discuss his continuing service to Wyoming. The two main inhibiting factors according to Mr. Bergeson, are the high landing fees at DIA and the small proportional share of fares from United that Mesa receives as the originating carrier. I will be visiting with the DIA folks soon to discuss fees at that terminal. ... [Read More]

APOD: 2003 March 26 - A Lenticular Cloud Over Wyoming
Explanation: Is that a cloud or a flying saucer? Both, although it is surely not an alien spacecraft . Lenticular clouds can be shaped like a saucer, and can fly in the sense that, like most clouds, they are composed of small water droplets that float on air. Lenticular clouds are typically formed by high winds over rugged terrain and are particularly apparent when few other clouds are in the sky. Lenticular clouds can take on particularly strange , layered shapes. Above , a couple stopped their car near Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming , USA to photograph this lenticular cloud behind picturesque windmills . ... [Read More]
