Rawlins FSS's 24-hour operation ended th summer of 1982 due to a staffing shortage, but part-time operation continued as aviation traffic declined with the decline of the energy boom in Wyoming. During the energy boom, gas and oil production, coal mines in the Hanna area, and the refinery at Sinclair brought daily executive jets to Rawlins. Flagstone for the building's foundation was quarriednear Fort Collins, Colorado, 45 miles south of Cheyenne, whilesandstone from quarries near Rawlins, Wyoming, was used in theconstruction of the upper floors. Additional wings on each side ofthe original structure were completed in 1890 and the final twowings were finished in 1917. The interior is finished in cherry,oak and butternut woods. The original cost and the two lateradditions totaled $389,569.13. The murals in the Senate and Housechambers were painted by Allen T. True. They depict industry,pioneer life, law and transportation.
