Grand Teton NP: A Place Called Jackson Hole (Chapter 14)
During this period, dude ranches in Jackson Hole established theircharacter and influenced tourism in a significant way. More dude ranchesthan hotels existed in the valley and facilities that could not beconsidered dude ranches were listed as such in brochures. Jackson Holedude ranches were mountain ranches situated in the midst of spectacularmountain scenery. Few were working cattle ranches. Jack Woodmandescribed his Flying V as a "producing horse and cattle ranch." Burt andCarncross intended to expand to cattle ranching, relegating the dudebusiness to a secondary activity, but never achieved this aim. Theybought the Anderson place on the Gros Ventre in 1916 intending to raisehay for nearly 100 head of saddle horses. Calling it the Lower Bar BC,they began raising cattle. Hammond and Bispham intended the White Grassto be a cattle ranch, but started taking in dudes in 1919. These werethe exceptions, rather than the norm. [ 22 ] ... [Read More]

National Park Service: Recreational Use of Land in the United States (Competitors)
The common desire to own a small segment of forestedlake front or stream side for a summer home or resort is rapidly leadingtoward the exhaustion of this waterfront resource, insofar as itsavailability to the great portion of our population is concerned. Thedesirable and habitable areas can be quickly consumed by a relativelysmall proportion of the population. It is, of course, true that greatrecreational value may accrue to the occupants of such retreats, but thequestion arises: Is this luxurious and extravagant utilization of alimited resource the wisest use? When every choice lake front, streamside, and beach is taken by private homes, clubs, stores, amusementdevices, and exclusive resorts, will the common demand for outdoorliving have been satisfied? It is not probable. Unnoticeable, at first, is the fact that some summerhomes, dude ranches, and resorts occupy the strategic points whichactually control the much larger hinterland. The wilderness—whetherpristine or greatly modi ... [Read More]

To the left o' me wuz a cliffa mile high and to the right o' me another one half a mile high, so Ikept on runnin' straight ahead. All of a sudden I came 'round a bend an'right in front o' me wuz a cliff two miles high. I wuz trapped. That'sall they wuz to it—trapped, where the devils couldn't help but getme" Dead silence, as the old fellow finished hisstory. Some Dude always broke it with: "Well, what did they do to you?"
