The Continental Divide cuts through Wyoming from thenorthwest to the south central border. Rivers east of the Dividedrain into the Missouri River Basin and eventually the AtlanticOcean. They are the Platte, Wind, Big Horn and the Yellowstonerivers. The Snake River in northwest Wyoming eventually drainsinto the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, as does the GreenRiver through the Colorado River Basin. ... Fossil Butte National Monument -Is a ruggedly impressive topographicfeature which rises sharply some 1,000 feet above Twin Creek Valleyto an elevation of more than 7,500 feet above sea level. At thebase of the butte are the brightly colored fossil beds of theWasatch Formation. Near the top of the butte are the much steeperbuff-to-white beds of the Green River Formation. The richestfossil fish deposits are found in limestone layers about three feetthick and lie from 30 to 300 feet below the varying surfaces of thebutte. The fossils represent several varieties of perch, as wellas other freshwater genera, and several kinds of herring whosedescendants now live in the sea. Faced with having to resupply his trappers each summer, Ashley devised a plan to bringsupplies to them at a pre-appointed place in the mountains, rather than bringing the partyback to St. Louis. In 1825, Ashley and his men crossed the Green River near the Big Sandy,descended the Green to Henry's Fork, and held the first such "rendezvous". Thisbegan a series of summer rendezvous renowned for their wild sprees of drinking, shooting,gambling, lying, and general celebration. Jedediah Smith, David Jackson, and WilliamSublette bought out Ashley's interests in 1826, and, in the summer of 1827, came rollingover South Pass pulling a two-wheeled cannon on their way to resupply the trappers. Fiveyears later, independent fur trader Captain Bonneville pulled the first wagon train overSouth Pass and down to the Green River, forging a trail for wagons over the Rockies andacross the Green River. ...
