Update on Wyoming's Leafy Spurge Research Program
This research was conducted near Devil's Tower, Wyoming to compare the efficacy of various rates of picloram for leafy spurge control. Plots were retreated to maintain or attain 80% control with light rates of picloram or picloram/2,4-D tankmixes. Initial treatments were 0.25 lb picloram to 2.0 lb picloram in 0.25 lb increments and 0.25 lb picloram + 1.0 lb 2,4-D. Retreatments were 0.25 or 0.5 lb picloram or 0.25 lb picloram + 1.0 lb 2,4-D. The initial treatment of 0.25 lb picloram was retreated only with 0.25 lb picloram and the initial treatment of 0.25 lb picloram + 1.0 lb 2,4-D was retreated only with 0.25 lb picloram + 1.0 lb 2,4-D. Plots were 10 by 27 ft. with four replications arranged in a randomized complete block. The initial herbicide treatments were applied May 24, 1989. Retreatments were applied June 6, 1990; June 13, 1991; June 10, 1992; September 22, 1993; and September 19, 1994. The soil was a silt loam (22% sand, 58% silt, and 20% clay) with 1.8% organic matter and a 6 ... [Read More]

Geology of Devils Tower National Monument
Although Devils Tower has long been a prominent landmark in northeastern Wyoming, the origin of the mammoth rock obelisk remains somewhat obscure. Geologists agree that Devils Tower formed from molten rock forced upwards from deep within the earth. Debate continues, however, as to whether the rock cooled underground or whether Devils Tower magma reached the surface. Current research supports the conclusion that Devils Tower was not a volcano, but was injected between sedimentary rock layers and cooled underground. The characteristic furrowed columns are the result of contraction which occured during the cooling of the magma. Geologic estimates have placed the age of Devils Tower at greater than 50 million years, although it is likely that erosion uncovered the rock formations only one or two million years ago. ... Glimpses of Our National Monuments (Devils Tower)
Devils Tower. The Devils Tower, an extraordinary mass of igneousrock, is one of the most conspicuous features in the Bear Lodge sectionof the Black Hills region of Wyoming. The tower rises 600 feet above arounded ridge of sedimentary rocks, which itself rises 600 feet abovethe Belle Fourche River. Its sides are fluted by great columns whichstand nearly perpendicular except near the top, where they round in, andnear the base, where they flare out. The base emerges into a talus ofbroken columns lying on a platform of buff sandstone. The whole presentsa never-to-be-forgotten spectacle. The great columns composing the tower are mostlypentagonal in shape but some are four or six sided. Each column is about6 feet in diameter, and the whole bunched together like a bundle ofmatches. In places several columns unite in their upper portion to forma large fluted column. In the lower quarter or third of the tower thecolumns bend outward and merge rapidly into massive rock which towardthe base sho ... [Read More]
