Wisconsin
In 1634, Frenchman Jean Nicolet became Wisconsin's first European explorer. The French controlled the area until 1763, when it was ceded to the British. The state's name is an English version of a French adaptation of an Indian name said to mean "the place where we live." The Wisconsin Territory was formed in 1836 and was admitted into the Union as the 30th state in 1848. With the nickname "America's Dairyland," it's no surprise that Wisconsin is one of the top producers of milk, cheese, and butter in the country. In fact, the loyal fans of the Green Bay Packers football team call themselves "cheeseheads." Milwaukee, the state's largest city, helps make Wisconsin one of the largest manufacturing states in the nation. The state capital, Madison, is home to the University of Wisconsin. The flower of the "Badger State" is the wood violet and the state bird is the robin. ... [Read More]

The Wisconsin quarter is the fifth of 2004, and the 30th in the 50 State Quarters® Program. On May 29, 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state to be admitted into the Union. The Wisconsin design depicts an agricultural theme featuring a cow, a round of cheese and an ear of corn. The design also bears an inscription of the State motto, "Forward." ...

Wisconsin adopted the State motto, "Forward," in 1851, reflecting Wisconsin's continuous drive to be a national leader. Wisconsin is considered "America's Dairy Land" with production of over 15 percent of the Nation's milk. Wisconsin also produces over 350 different varieties, types and styles of award-winning cheeses – more than any other state. There are approximately 17,000 dairy farms, with just over one million cows that produce an average of 17,306 gallons of milk each, per year. ... [Read More]

Outbreak of
Dairy plant A had produced four or five vats of pasteurized cheddar and Colby cheese products 5 days a week since 1977. Each vat yielded approximately 1500 pounds of cheese that was pressed into 40-lb blocks, daisies (rounds of cheese), or was packaged as fresh cheese curds. Dairy plant A also produced unpasteurized (raw milk) cheddar cheese daisies every June as part of Dairy Month. Certain raw milk cheese products can be produced and sold legally as long as the cheese is held at > 35 F ( > 1.7 C) for at least 60 days before it is sold*. Curds are sold fresh (held <60 days); therefore, curds must be made with pasteurized milk. At least one 1500-lbs vat of raw milk cheddar cheese was made on May 27 and June 2--5. These vats were used inadvertently to make fresh curds, which were incorrectly labeled "pasteurized" cheddar cheese curds, and distributed and sold in six Wisconsin counties. ... [Read More]

WDNR - Dairy Gateway
Economic sustainability: Over the last decade, Wisconsin has lost an average of 3.5 dairy farms per day. Wisconsin dairies are struggling to compete with larger dairy farms in California and other states. Cheese producers are also moving out of state as they see declining milk production in Wisconsin and increasing production elsewhere. Many dairy farmers in Wisconsin believe their economic survival depends on expanding and modernizing. The importance of these trends to Wisconsin's economy cannot be denied. Dairy agriculture and cheese production has always been vital to the economy of Wisconsin. They create more than 80,000 jobs in the state and pump $18.5 billion dollars into the economy. Wisconsin's economy has suffered and will continue to suffer if we can't sustain our dairy and cheese industries. ... [Read More]
