WDNR - DNR Outdoor Report - March 9, 2004
Snow conditions continue to be excellent in the Lake Superior Basin. With and additional 6 inches of new snow at the end of last week, snowmobile and cross-country ski trails are in great shape. Off trails, the snow is DEEP in the woods: great for snowshoeing. Ice conditions remain poor for travel with lots of slush and deep snow conditions. Fishing is picking up with panfish caught on the inland lakes for those that can make there way out to the fishing spots. Lake Superior is producing a few lake trout in the deeper water and some northern and walleye activity in the Bay. The Lake Superior tributary streams all have open water and waterfowl viewing opportunities. If the deep snow continues the March 27 tributary trout opener may prove to be a challenge. The early catch and release season that opened on March 1 does not apply to most streams that flow into Lake Superior. Make sure to check the current trout regulations. Approximately 132 wild turkeys were netted and relocated to areas ... [Read More]

WDNR - Dam Safety Program
In recent decades, Wisconsin has seen a large number of its historic dams aging and falling into disrepair. There has historically offered the owners of these dams the option of repairing the dam to meet current standards or abandoning the permits for the dam and removing it from the waterway. As dam removals have been accomplished over the last 20 years significant improvements have been noted in water quality, habitat and bio-diversity at many of these sites. The Department’s activities in these situations have included participating in public information meetings to explain the benefits of dam removal to the surrounding ecosystem and assisting with funding to buyout the owners interest in the dam. In the future these types of efforts will probably continue on a selective basis, driven by watershed plans that identify dams which are most detrimental to the ecosystem. These efforts cannot be accomplished without a willing owner or if there is a responsible party that is willing and ab ... [Read More]

WDNR - West Central Region Trails Network Plan
From Stevens Point to Wisconsin Dells, a potential trail route should use roadways that generally follow the Wisconsin River and its flowages and may provide access to Roche-A-Cri and Buckhorn state parks for trail users. With the support of the counties, this could become a designated bike route. Paved shoulders should be included with any future road improvements. The Ice Age Trail crosses this potential corridor near the intersection of County Highway Z and State Highway 82 ... [Read More]

NPS: Nature & Science» Geology Resources Division
The torrents of meltwater released from the wasting glacier or draining glacial lakes cut spectacular gorges in several areas of the State. Some, such as the Dalles of the St. Croix, the Wisconsin Dells, and the Dells of the Eau Claire, are still occupied by streams. Others, like the smaller gorge at the Cross Plains Ice Age Reserve Unit , are now dry except for spring and storm runoff. ...

Just north of Devils Lake State Park, the trail divides. The western branch passes the Dells of the Wisconsin River, which were formed by glacial meltwater, and crosses the flat bed of glacial Lake Wisconsin in Juneau and Adams Counties, passing sandstone buttes rising among scrub oaks and jack pines. The eastern branch follows the moraines through Columbia and Marquette Counties and joins together with the western branch in Chaffee Creek Fishery Area. ... [Read More]

WDNR - Mill Bluff Geology
Erosion by wind and water eventually wear away the underlying soft sandstone until the weight of the over hanging cap rock causes it to shatter and fall. The mounds will decrease in size until all the capping is removed. Then the mound becomes a conical hill, gradually blending into the plain. ...

Even though this park is in the driftless area (exit DNR) which the glaciers missed, the geologic features are partially the result of the last or Wisconsin stage, of glaciation. During this glacial advance, the Wisconsin River was plugged near Wisconsin Dells. The river spread out to form glacial Lake Wisconsin, covering most of what today are Adams, Juneau, and other adjacent counties, including the Mill Bluff area. During this time, some of the mesa and buttes stood as islands in the glacial lake, while others were submerged. Wave action hastened erosion of the sides of the rock forms. ... [Read More]

WDNR - State Parks History
John Nolen’s State Park’s for Wisconsin published by The State Park Board. Report provides guidelines for a state park system in Wisconsin and recommends creation of four state parks, at Devil’s Lake, Dells of the Wisconsin River, Door County’s Fish Creek (became Peninsula State Park) and Grant County’s confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers (became Wyalusing State Park). (Of these all but the Dells of the Wisconsin River became state parks. The Dells Natural Area opened to the public in 1997, completing Nolen’s plan.) ... [Read More]
