Senator Byrd - Speeches
I am pleased and proud to say, 140 years later, that I can look upon my West Virginia with "joy and gladness and pride of heart."  On this West Virginia Day, I again want to speak about the people of West Virginia, the hardest-working and most patriotic people in the United States.  They have endured hardships, poverty, and floods of biblical proportions, but have remained loyal to their state and our Nation.   Whenever the country has needed them, in war or in peace, they have always been there, and I have always been so proud to represent them in the United States Senate. On this West Virginia Day, I again speak about the splendors of my State -- truly one of the most beautiful states in the Nation.  With its rushing, trout-filled mountain streams, its  majestic rolling green  hills, picturesque villages and towns, magnificent forests, scenic state parks -- no wonder the State has been depicted in song and verse as being "almost heaven."&n ... Cumberland County, Virginia
One of the last battles of the Civil War was fought at historic "High Bridge," which spans the Appomattox River from Cumberland to Prince Edward County. This historic railroad bridge was built in 1854 with brick piers supporting a wooden superstructure, which was partially burned during the Civil War. These now stand overshadowed by their 1914 steel counterpart in use today for freight trains. General Robert E. Lee received Grant's first communication concerning the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia while camping at Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Both of the sites are included in the driving tour of the Route of Lee's Retreat, which follows the final campaign of the Civil War from Petersburg to Appomattox. ... [Read More]

Virginia Naturally: VA's Natural Resources Education Guide
Protecting our water is the responsibility of all Virginians, including state government. Virginia was among the first state in the nation to embrace this responsibility and in 1946 enacted the Virginia Water Control Law to combat water pollution (two years before the adoption of the first Federal Water Pollution Control Act by Congress). Over the past 30 years, resource managers have made great strides to address water-related concerns. One concern is adequate future supplies for shared use by consumers, farmers, industries, and recreationists. The goal sounds simple enough but may prove our most challenging: to provide the right quantity of satisfactory quality water where and when it is needed. For example, power plants supplying electricity and factories supplying goods use vast amounts of water. ... [Read More]

President Discusses Social Security for Future Generations in Virginia
Think about that. A person who has made $35,000 over their lifeallowed to take a third of the payroll taxes, set it aside in thepersonal savings account they call their own. That person has got anest egg, tangible assets that they can then pass on to whomever theychoose. That's the power of compound -- of compounding interest. Wedon't have that power if we hold your money in government to the extentthat you can have if you hold it yourself. And that's what -- that'swhat Yuctan is talking about. He said -- I think he's saying, justgive me the chance. He wants -- ... [Read More]
