The Salem/Roanoke County jail near Roanoke College is significantly overcrowded, but studies indicate expanding the current facility to house the city/county's growing inmate population is not feasible. As a result, Roanoke County is preparing to construct a new regional jail in partnership with Salem and two neighboring jurisdictions (Montgomery and Franklin counties). ... At the February 22 Board of Supervisors evening session, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors voted to authorize the County Administrator to submit a joint application to the Virginia Department of Corrections for permission to construct a 592 cell regional jail on behalf of Roanoke County, Salem, Montgomery and Franklin Counties. The application must be submitted by March 1, 2005 to meet the state imposed deadline to be considered for funding in the 2006 state budget process.
