China (03/05)
On January 1, 1979, the Chinese Government officially adopted the pinyin system for spelling Chinese names and places in Roman letters. A system of Romanization invented by the Chinese, pinyin has long been widely used in China on street and commercial signs as well as in elementary Chinese textbooks as an aid in learning Chinese characters. Variations of pinyin also are used as the written forms of several minority languages. ...

While the Chinese constitution affirms religious toleration, the Chinese Government places restrictions on religious practice outside officially recognized organizations. Only two Christian organizations--a Catholic church without official ties to Rome and the "Three-Self-Patriotic" Protestant church--are sanctioned by the Chinese Government. Unauthorized churches have sprung up in many parts of the country and unofficial religious practice is flourishing. In some regions authorities have tried to control activities of these unregistered churches. In other regions, registered and unregistered groups are treated similarly by authorities and congregations worship in both types of churches. Most Chinese Catholic bishops are recognized by the Pope, and official priests have Vatican approval to administer all the sacraments. ... [Read More]

DC Hotels -- Survey Comments from ZIG meeting Attendees
$108.41 plus tax per night convenient, would recommend ingeneral... BUT... They had no record of my CONFIRMED reservation, and I had a bit of a hassel getting a room, although thereservation had been made and confirmed a couple of months ahead oftime. $109/night. Convenientlocation, but I wouldn't recommend it or stay there again. Therooms are shabby and not terribly clean. I stayed there a year ago, and it seemed worse this time. $109 per night. Yes, Iwould recommend it. The location was wonderful - I'd far rathersleep a little later in the morning and be right next to where Ihave to meet than stay in a more lively location and have tocommute. Taking the metro in the evening to go out isn't bad.The staff on the night (late) I arrived weren't too pleasant but, after that, everyone was terrific. The room was pleasant and Ithank you for the recommendations. $109 per night (approx) Hotel was fine. Location was fine.No on-site food preparred - you have to get a token and go tothe nearby ... Waiters and Waitresses
1997 THE JOBWAITERS and WAITRESSES work in a lot of other places besides restaurants. You could work in hotel or motel dining rooms, coffee shops, diners, or other places where food and drinks are served. To be a Waiter or Waitress you have to be able to think fast and have a good memory and be good at arithmetic. That's because in a lot of places the customers want their food right away, and you have to be able to remember their orders and write them down on the check correctly. You have to add up the items on the check without making a mistake and be able to figure out the tax.In fancier places the customers are not in so much of a rush, but that also means they expect extra courtesy and better service. So, in these places you can relax a bit more, but you have to pay more attention to the customers. They might want you to explain what goes into their meal and how it is cooked. You might recommend what wine they'd like to drink or you might prepare simple items like salads at the table ... [Read More]
