I am the daughter of two Italian immigrants. I am an anthropologist who first learned that some Italian Americans were interned or excluded in WWII when I was studying San Francisco's Italian American community in 1973. When I was interviewing a woman active in social organizations, she told me the Italian groups were ''not the same since the war . . . some of the best people were sent away'' and that now people were afraid to be ''too Italian.''
