As I’ve traveled the country, I’ve spoken often of the need to keep small credit unions remaining strong. Unfortunately, one of the biggest changes in the credit union landscape in recent years has been the disappearance of small credit unions. In 2001, we lost 333 credit unions nationally, including 11 in Virginia. Through November of last year, we lost 327 including four Virginia credit unions. Most of these credit unions are under $10 million in assets. The disappearance of small credit unions is expected to continue. Right now, there are fewer than 10,000 credit unions. I suspect that, in less than 10 years, there will be about 6,000 surviving credit unions. Few will be under $10 million. ... [Read More]
