Virginia DEQ: TMDLs in Virginia
DEQ has developed lists of impaired waters in every even year since 1992. The most recent list was published in 2002. It individually describes segments of streams, lakes, and estuaries that exhibit violations of water quality standards. The report details the pollutant responsible for the violations, and the cause and source of the pollutant. Since 1998, DEQ has developed plans, with public input, to restore and maintain the water quality for the impaired waters. These plans are called "Total Maximum Daily Loads," or TMDLs. TMDL is a term that represents the total pollutant a waterbody can assimilate and still meet standards. ... [Read More]

Virginia DEQ - Director's Corner - Improving air quality across Virginia
The Commonwealth is implementing a remote sensing program as part of the Northern Virginia automobile emissions inspection and maintenance program. Parts of Northern Virginia do not meet ozone and particle pollution standards, meaning they are designated as non-attainment areas. Since automobile emissions can contribute to ozone and particle pollution, reducing pollution emissions from automobiles will result in better air quality. Remote sensing provides tailpipe exhaust readings while a vehicle is being driven. DEQ will use this data in the future to identify polluting vehicles. Information from this program also will be used to reward drivers of exceptionally clean automobiles by using the remote sensing data in lieu of their next required emissions test. ... [Read More]
