Southwest Virginia Museum State Park
The museum is housed in a mansion built in the 1880s by Rufus Ayers, a Virginia attorney general. The museum was acquired by the commonwealth in 1946 from the Slemp Foundation, established by C. Bascom Slemp, private secretary to President Calvin Coolidge and a member of the U. S. Congress. The museum was officially dedicated by the state in 1948. It features a collection comprised of more than 20,000 pieces, about one third of which is on display at any given time. The museum chronicles the exploration and development of the town and surrounding area during the 1890s coal boom, as well as the pioneer period. It offers activities for kids, scout and school programs, workshops, an annual Festival of Trees program and a walking tour of the grounds. The museum sells archival supplies and offers the opportunity to have pictures of collection pieces copied, as well as copies of reference files. Hours of operation will be posted at the entrance to each public shooting range and noperson may use the range except during posted hours. A range may be temporarily closed at the discretion of theresponsible District Game Biologist or the area wildlife manager. Allpersons using a public shooting range must obey all posted range safety rules. Glass ormetal containers may not be used as targets on any public shooting range. Only paper, clay or metal silhouette targetsmay be used on public shooting ranges without prior approval from the DistrictGame Biologist or the area wildlife manager. Virginia State Parks provide comfortable and economical overnight accommodations, with 180 climate-controlled cabins and more than 1,400 campsites, ranging from primitive sites to developed sites with electric and water hookups. Many cabins are available year round. While most campgrounds are open from March 1 through the end of the first week of December, primitive campsites are available year-round. ...

Before the scheduled check in time, cabins cancellations or exchanges may be made by calling the Reservation Center or the park when the Reservation Center is closed. Cancellations made a month prior to the scheduled arrival date will be charged a $20 cancellation fee. Cancellations made less than a month before the scheduled arrival date will be charged $20 per night. The cancellation fee also applies to early departures and reducing the number of nights of the reservation. Assateague Island National Seashore Camping
The Virginia district of Assateague Island is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a National Wildlife Refuge. Pets are prohibited (even in your vehicle) in the Virginia district of Assateague Island! The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is open year round.
