DCE provides assistance to students who are interested in enrolling in Post Secondary and Distance Learning courses through various Community Colleges in Virginia as well as colleges and universities nationwide. It should be noted that inmates are not eligible to receive federal Pell Grants, thus they must have their own financial resources with which they can pay for tuition, books and other expenses. (For information about a potential alternative funding source, see the section below entitled the "Workplace and Community Transition Training for Incarcerated Youth Offenders" Grant). Currently, about one in five Virginia high school seniors takes a dual-enrollment, college-level class, and about three-quarters of high schools offer some Advanced Placement (AP) courses. However, very few schools allow seniors to earn up to a full semester of college credit.
