Senator Byrd - Speeches
I am pleased and proud to say, 140 years later, that I can look upon my West Virginia with "joy and gladness and pride of heart."  On this West Virginia Day, I again want to speak about the people of West Virginia, the hardest-working and most patriotic people in the United States.  They have endured hardships, poverty, and floods of biblical proportions, but have remained loyal to their state and our Nation.   Whenever the country has needed them, in war or in peace, they have always been there, and I have always been so proud to represent them in the United States Senate. On this West Virginia Day, I again speak about the splendors of my State -- truly one of the most beautiful states in the Nation.  With its rushing, trout-filled mountain streams, its  majestic rolling green  hills, picturesque villages and towns, magnificent forests, scenic state parks -- no wonder the State has been depicted in song and verse as being "almost heaven."&n ... VDGIF > Wildlife > Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trail
Description: The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority supports a number of parks along the Occoquan and Bull Creek watersheds. Most have been developed for multiple use. However, hidden by the baseball fields and fishing docks are an impressive matrix of nature trails and wildlife viewing opportunities. Occoquan Regional Park is situated on the Occoquan River just off I-95. Intermingled amidst the 400 acres of traditional recreational amenities are historic brick kilns (as well as the ghosts of suffragists imprisoned here in the early 1900s). Hiking trails allow access to mature eastern deciduous forest, with a predictable assortment of woodland birds that is impressive, given the site's proximity to I-95. The Occoquan River may be viewed from the decks at the marina, and waterfowl crowd these waters during migrations. ... [Read More]

FRB: Beige Book - Richmond
Tourism in the Fifth District continued to strengthen since our last report. Most sources reported that activity during the Fourth of July holiday exceeded that of a year ago, partly because of more favorable weather. A hotelier on the Outer Banks of North Carolina noted that strong bookings made it difficult for visitors without reservations to find weekend accommodations there. In mountain areas, a source from West Virginia reported that interest in white water rafting had increased and that more people were "seeking refuge from urban areas" this summer. ... [Read More]
