ABSTRACTS 1999 - water resources research
Chemical and isotopic analyses of water and gases were determined from 44 thermal and saline springs and wells located near the San Andreas fault system to investigate the role of fluids in the dynamics of this major plate-bounding fault. Results indicate that the waters are mainly of meteoric origin, with shallow to moderate circulation depths (down to 6 km). The chemical compositions of water and gases are highly variable, controlled mainly by the enclosing rock types. However, compositions and isotope abundances of noble gases and d 13 C values of HCO 3 indicate a significant (up to 50%) mantle component for volatiles. Because upper mantle gases are dominated by CO 2 (C/ 3 He ~ 1010), model calculations yield high CO 2 flux values of 0.001-1 kg CO2/(km 2 -s). The highest CO 2 fluxes are from fluids in the Franciscan assemblage, where C and He isotopes indicate a dominantly crustal source for CO 2 . We had an engineering firm prepare an Independent Cost Estimate (ICE) for a rebuild and upgrade of a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling facility in Oct. 2003. How long is this ICE good for? ... In response to our competitive RFP, our company received 15 proposals for a new design, low-pressure valve and other items. We are buying 10,000 units of this valve made largely of stamped parts to replace an older type of valve that had a number of casting and machining items. We performed an in-house estimate to manufacture the valves before receiving the proposals, arriving at a unit price of $8.66 for the item. Of the proposals received, nine were in the range of $9.20 to $10.40, and four ranged from $11.60 to $15.20. The two lowest bidders, who are well-established metal forming companies, were at $6.16 and $7.44.
