Why Leaves Change Colors
Fall color traditionally begins in northern Ohio, making a splash during the last week of September, then travels southward with peak color occurring in mid-October throughout most of the state. ODNR will begin issuing Fall Color updates on September 24 to help Ohioans and out-of-state visitors plan their autumn outings. ...

Visible Earth: New England's Autumn Colors
These two images were collected by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), flying aboard NASA's Terra satellite. The top image shows the region of North America spanning from the Canadian provinces of Quebec (upper left) and New Brunswick (upper right) down through the states of Maine, New Hampsire, Vermont, and Massachusetts (bottom). MODIS acquired the top image on October 9, 2001, after the autumn change in foliage began. The bottom image was acquired September 12, 2001, just before the trees began to change color. ... An Australian Road Review
The state leased six portable toilets during the fall of 1996 to help deal with the influx of visitors during the busy foliage season, but these drew new complaints. State officials needed a solution that could be designed and built quickly for the next foliage season. ...

"Living Machines are such a cost-effective alternative," said Foster. "Typically, the cost to connect to a municipal wastewater treatment plant can easily exceed a million dollars versus $250,000 for a Living Machine." The Living Machine was operating in time for the 1997 autumn foliage season. ... [Read More]

Climate New Hampshire has a changeable climate, with wide variations in daily andseasonal temperatures. The variations are affected by proximity tothe ocean, mountains, lakes or rivers. The state enjoys all four seasons. Our summers are short and cool; winters are long and cold; fall is glorious with foliage. The weather station on Mount Washington has recorded some of the coldest temperatures and strongest winds in the continental United States. ...

Geographies sometimes speak of the state as the "Mother of Rivers." Five of the great streams ofNew England originate in its granite hills. The Connecticut River rises in the north; the Pemigewasset River starts in the Profile Lake in the Franconia mountains and joins theWinnipesaukee at Franklin to form the Merrimack River; the Cocheco and Salmon Falls rivers join at Dover to form the Piscataqua River; and two of the principal rivers of Maine, the Androscoggin and the Saco, have their beginnings in northern New Hampshire. ... Climate Change Impacts on the US: Northeast. Educational Resources
Forests of the Northeast region could be affected by climate change in many ways that could compromise tourism and outdoor recreation. Ground-level ozone and other air-borne pollutants threaten the health of the Northeast's forests. High-elevation spruce and fir forests are as much at risk from exposure to pollution as they are from climate-related winter freeze injury because of their relative susceptibility to ozone impacts. The renowned fall foliage of this region will also suffer if changes in climate result in: significant changes in the preferred range of species northward; forest diebacks; or delayed or disparate coloration. A knowledgeable researcher has suggested that the region's famed maples, which exhibit such brilliant fall colors, as well as its birch and spruce trees, could experience major diebacks by the mid-21 st century as a result of possible extreme weather events associated with climate changes. ... Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park
Park Restrictions – According to the terms of the gift of the park, bicycles, snowmobiles, and other motorized vehicles (other than those to maintain the site) are prohibited from park use. ITS Technology – There is no precedent for the use of ITS technology within the park or town of Woodstock. Even VMS would appear extremely out of character with the image of the town as the town does not have a single traffic signal in operation. Signage – Signage to locate the site is inadequate. The state of Vermont has a billboard ban which restricts the type of signage permitted for commercial enterprises. This extends to the park as well. Some limited signage directs visitors to the Billings Farm and Museum, which serves to lead the visitors to the park as well. The Park has submitted its request for signage to the state. However, the final result is limited to a modest sign with words but no directional arrows or other graphics. Parking – The parking area for the par ... [Read More]
