MassWildlife Black Bear Biology FAQs While insects comprise an important part of a black bears diet, particularly in summer, vertebrate prey is less commonly taken. Black bears will scavenge carcasses of winter-killed deer or other hoofed animals in spring after den emergence. However, most living prey animals are too swift or elusive to be caught by black bears on a regular basis. An exception occurs during a brief period in spring when newborn moose, deer, or caribou young are vulnerable. Black bears were presumed to be the largest source of moose calf mortality when black bear numbers were 10 times greater than brown bears and when black bear densities were greater than 520 per 1000 mi². Predation nearly ceased by the time the calves are 2 months old. However, cow moose will aggressively defend their young against bear attack, and bears may be injured or killed when attempting to prey on moose calves. In Newfoundland, black bears accounted for 35% of caribou calf mortalities, 62% of which occurred within 4 ... [Read More]
Black Bears in North America Two of 16 recognized subspecies of black bears (Hall 1981) require special mention: the Louisiana bear ( U.a. luteolus ), with a range of east Texas, all of Louisiana, and southern Mississippi; and the Florida bear ( U.a. floridanus ), with a range of Florida and southern Alabama. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was petitioned in 1987 and 1990 to list the Louisiana bear and the Florida bear, respectively, as endangered species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. In 1992 the Louisiana bear was officially placed on the federal endangered species list as a threatened species, and the Florida bear was placed in a "warranted but precluded" category. This latter category indicates that although biological evidence supports listing, several other species of higher priority are awaiting listing and will be listed before the Florida bear. At present, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering listing bears in southern but not northern Florida. ... [Read More]

VDGIF > Hunting > Bear Management Plan > Supply & Demand Bear hunting issues are as contentious among bear hunters and other hunters as they are with the general public. In Idaho, only 28% of other hunters favored bear hunting with dogs. During the mid-1970s in Virginia, 74% of the opportunistic bear hunters (i.e., those hunters who were primarily hunting deer, but would harvest a bear if they had the opportunity) were opposed to hunting bears with dogs. Similarly in 1993, 54% of the non-dog bear hunters did not favor the bear-dog training season in Virginia. On the other hand, 82% of dog bear hunters favored the bear-dog training season; only 14% of the dog bear hunters opposed the training season with 5% remaining neutral. MassWildlife - Black Bears Despite popular belief, black bears are not fierce. Their first response is usually to flee and in woodland areas the bears may disappear long before they are seen. Black bears sometimes can become habituated to human presence and conditioned to human food sources. These circumstances may then lead to damage or depredations which have unfortunate consequences if people then destroy the bear out of fear or to alleviate the damage. Black bears rarely harm people, although minor defensive attacks can occur when people tease or closely approach bears in parks or campgrounds. Female black bears defend their cubs by putting them up a tree. The sows may huff and blow and make short rushes at people who get near the cubs, but will almost never press home an attack. Deliberate predatory attacks are very rare and typically occur in remote areas. ... [Read More]
