Vermont's single House member is Bernie Sanders, a Socialist elected as an independent since 1990 but treated as a Democrat in the House. Sanders grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, the son of a paint salesman, became involved in radical politics at the University of Chicago, then came to Vermont as part of the hippie invasion of 1968. His rumpled, tieless, sincere persona helped him win election as mayor of Burlington in 1981 by 10 votes, after losing four statewide races. There he governed ably for eight years, using the city's prosperity to start a municipal day-care center, expand low- and moderate-income housing, put a pollution control facility on Lake Champlain and switch the tax base from property to hotel and restaurant fees and a utility tax on companies using certain public facilities. Domestic violence is an issue I have always been conscious of. In fact, while mayor of Burlington, I worked with the Burlington Women's Council and the police department to begin special training classes for police officers who respond to domestic violence calls. As a member of Congress, I have continued the fight to eradicate domestic and sexual violence. This year I helped to secure a grant of more than $162,000 for the city of St. Albans to combat domestic violence in Franklin and Grand Isle counties. Shelburne Farms works with school administrators from Burlington, Vermont's largest city, to buy local, organically raised food for school lunches through partnerships with area farmers and agricultural producers that are part of the Vermont Fresh Network. Food produced within Burlington's "foodshed" is delivered to Burlington schools, including produce, milk, and cheese from Shelburne Farms.
