Bennington plays an important role in the history of the state. In 1777, British and Hessian forces under Colonel Baum were defeated at the Battle of Bennington. Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys, who were founded in Bennington in 1770, aided General Stark of New Hampshire in this revolutionary victory. In effect, Bennington is also the birthplace of the state, since the vote to make the Independent Republic of Vermont the 14th state in the union took place on the town's green in 1791.
