White River Junction
As the name implies, this city served an important role in the history of the railroad. It was New Englands railroad hub in the 19th century, connecting all the major cities in the region, such as Boston and New York, and providing a link to the westward expanding rails. The Connecticut and White rivers also merge here, as well as the main travel arteries: Interstates 89 and 91. Little remains of the railroads' former splendor, but white River is still at the hub of the state's main road arteries, which means that this city will likely play an important role in the future of Vermont. White River Junction is home to the famous Catamount Brewery as well as numerous shops and restaurants. To the north of the city, in the Connecticut River Valley, lie tucked away some of Vermont's most treasured rural communities, which are worth exploring for travelers who tire of the interstates. ... NHTSA Action Plan for 15-Passenger Van Safety
Survey Tire Pressure and Condition in the 12- and 15-Passenger Van Fleet and Analyze the Role of Tires in Rollover Causation: As part of NHTSA's development of long-term performance requirements for tire pressure-monitoring systems, NTSB recommends (August 2003) NHTSA adopt more stringent detection standards than 25 or 30 percent below manufacturer-recommended levels. This recommendation is based on the NTSB's view that pressures at those levels may have an adverse effect on the handling of vehicles, such as 12- and 15-passenger vans. Work has been conducted at NHTSA's Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) on the relationship between inflation pressure in front and rear tires, loading conditions, and handling for a 15-passenger van (see Countermeasure Research section for detail). The agency believes that more information is needed on the level of tire pressure under-inflation and tire wear conditions and tire failure for 15-passenger vans in use for consumer information, vehicle so ... The states in Region 7 all ban whole tires from disposal in landfills and have enacted rules and regulations to ensure the proper management of scrap tires. Iowa's Waste Tire End Users Incentives Program provides up to $10 per ton to end users of processed waste tire products to increase end uses/markets for processed waste tire materials including the purchase of tire derived fuel , crumb rubber , or shredded tires for civil engineering uses . Nebraska and Missouri also provide grants to users of scrap tires and tire derived products. The state of Kansas provides funds for the development of waste tire recycling markets. ... [Read More]

Scrap Tires - User Guideline - Embankment or Fill
Another possible means of mitigating scrap tire embankment settlements is to use a rubber-soil mix to construct the embankment, instead of using tire shreds or tire chips alone. It has been found that a ratio of about 40 percent tire chips by weight of soil may be an optimum value for the quantity of chips in a rubber-soil mix, although this may vary depending on the size of the tire chips and the type of soil. The optimum ratio of tire chips to soil is likely to yield a compacted dry unit weight of rubber-soil mix that is roughly two-thirds the dry unit weight of soil alone. Data on the stress-strain and strength behavior of rubber-soil mixtures are not widely available, but are necessary for the design and prediction of performance of scrap tire embankments that contain such mixtures.
