Marijuana - Vermont Drug Threat Assessment Wholesale distribution of marijuana in Vermont is extremely rare but sometimes occurs. For example, in 1999 the Vermont Drug Task Force and the U.S. Customs Service investigated all eight members of a Vermont-based criminal group that distributed multiton quantities of marijuana in Vermont and other New England locations. The marijuana had been purchased in the southwestern states. Loosely organized Caucasian criminal groups and local independent Caucasian dealers are the dominant retail distributors of marijuana in the state. Members of these groups typically purchase marijuana from Caucasian criminal groups in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York either transporting it themselves or arranging for shipments to be sent to Vermont. Loosely organized Caucasian criminal groups and local independent Caucasian dealers also distribute retail quantities of marijuana, which they purchase from local growers. ... [Read More]

Agriculture & Industry in Vermont Agriculture in Vermont has played a dominant role in the State's development. The region's first New England/European settlers were primarily farmers, cultivating only that which they and their immediate community required. Sparse settlements were established in the southern half of the state in the mid 1700s, but more permanent settlements and cultivation of the land for export were not measurable until after the Revolutionary War. By 1790, the establishment of good shipping routes to Canada and southern New England cities expanded the possibilities for trade. The earliest exports were potash and pearl ash, two forest-clearing by-products. These were replaced by crops from large diversified farms. Major exports included potatoes, grains, and livestock, especially beef cattle. Their importance within Vermont agriculture was established in the early 19th century, when large herds of cattle were driven overland to Boston, New York and other east coast markets. ... BLM Info: Land for Sale? How are these lands selected for sale? The law states that the BLM can select lands for sale if, through land use planning, they are found to meet one of three criteria: 1) they are scattered, isolated tracts, difficult or uneconomic to manage; 2) they were acquired for a specific purpose and are no longer needed for that purpose; or 3) disposal of the land will serve important public objectives, such as community expansion and economic development. ... Public Land is undeveloped land with no improvements, usually part of the original public domain established during the western expansion of the United States. Most of this land is in the 11 Western States and Alaska, although some scattered parcels are in the East. This land is the responsibility of the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM). (Note: Because of land entitlements to the State of Alaska and to Alaska Natives, no public land sales will be conducted in Alaska in the foreseeable future.) ... [Read More]
Vermont Clean and Clear - AG Alt. Manure Management Utilization of lagoons has created other management challenges. Vermont developed Accepted Agricultural Practices in 1994, which included a prohibition on winter spreading of manure. This coupled with increased farm size has led to larger lagoons and manure spreading equipment. A 6000 gallon tank of manure weighs nearly 50,000 pounds and the combined weight of the tank and tractor can exceed 75,000 pounds. Many farms have chosen to focus their efforts on herd and crop management and hire "custom operators" to spread manure in the spring, once during the summer and again in the fall. Typically custom operators arrive at a farm according to a set schedule and empty lagoons regardless of the weather. Occasionally roads are subjected to frequent trips with large equipment hauling heavy loads. Vermont's back roads do not have sufficient base to support equipment traveling with intensity for short time periods. ... [Read More]
