Funding For Rutland State Airport
Under the proposed eligibility guidelines, a community would be ineligible for EAS funding if it is less than 100 miles away from a large or medium hub airport; 70 highway miles from the nearest small hub airport; or 50 highway miles from the nearest airport providing scheduled service with jet aircraft. While this proposal would not negatively impact the Rutland Airport this year, it will have a devastating impact on the airport next year. This is due to the fact that the Burlington, Vermont Airport currently listed as providing service with jet aircraft will soon be listed as a small hub airport. In addition, the Albany County, New York Airport currently listed as a small hub airport will soon be listed as a medium hub airport. When these changes go into effect, the Rutland Airport, along with 19 other communities throughout the United States, will be ineligible for EAS funds. ... [Read More]

Overview - Vermont Drug Threat Assessment
Burlington International Airport is Vermont's only international airport. In 2000 a discount airline company in Vermont began offering $49 one-way flights between Burlington International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York City. This stimulated competition, and soon another airline company offered $99 round-trip jet service between Burlington International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. The competition among airline companies on this route keeps fares low, resulting in increased passenger volume. This increase in passenger volume reduces the risk of exposure for drug couriers, allowing the couriers to blend in with the other passengers. The Burlington Police Department is concerned that criminal groups and independent dealers are increasingly using this method to transport drugs into the state. ... [Read More]
