Utah History To Go - Utah Jazz
In 1974 a nine-man group, mainly Californians, spent $6.15 million to form the expansion New Orleans Jazz, the eighteenth franchise in the National Basketball Association. The colors of the Mardi Gras—purple, green and gold—were chosen as the Jazz colors. State hero Pete Maravich, college basketball's all-time leading scorer at LSU, was acquired for a high price from Atlanta and the fledgling Jazz were ready for the inaugural season. The Jazz lost their first eleven games, and coach Scotty Robertson was fired four games later. The die had been cast. The Jazz won only 23 games in 1974-75 seasons. In their five years in New Orleans, the Jazz never played .500 ball even though they did win 39 games in 1977-78. That was also the year Maravich wrecked his right knee, Louisiana businessman Andrew Martin sold his 20 percent of the club to the Californians, and the Jazz drafted Lucy Harris of Delta State, the first woman ever picked in the NBA draft. It was later revealed that Lucy Harris was ... [Read More]

Utah Arts Council - Community/State Partnership - Utah Performing Arts Tour 2004-05 - Ellis & Franklin - Keltic Jazz
Ellis & Franklin pushes the outside edge of the Celtic genre by using contemporary arrangements of traditional folk melodies and utilizing modern electronic instruments. The music created and performed depicts the jazz idiom by combining many styles with the Celtic main theme: country, pop, rock, classical, bluegrass, folk, African treatments, smooth jazz. Some pieces have a story or poetry that sets the theme. The folklore comes from the Celtic peoples of the British Isles and is used to demonstrate our musical roots as Americans.  ... [Read More]

The Red Rock Hot Club
The Red Rock Hot Club (RRHC) recreates the sounds of Paris in the 1930's and 40's. In 1934, guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli created a group that would be Europe's largest contribution to a new American art form called Jazz. The group was called "The Quintet of the Hot Club of France"; their Euro-Classical musical backgrounds blended uniquely with Jazz to create their own style. The style and genre has taken on several names...Jazz Manouche, Gadjo Swing, Jazz Hot, Hot Swing or my favorite..."Gypsy Jazz". The RRHC is Utah's Premier Gypsy Jazz Project. They play authentic, acoustic, stringed instruments, which are the key to making this music sound right. ... [Read More]

Utah History To Go - Delta Center
Decades later, the area served a new purpose. The Salt Palace arena was built in the late 1960s to become a center for entertainment and conventions. The arena eventually became the home of a professional basketball team, the Utah Jazz. In 1985 and 1984, the Jazz organization drafted Karl Malone and John Stockton, respectively. Tickets quickly became a hot commodity and sellouts were taken for granted since it was the smallest arena in the NBA at a capacity of 12,666. The Jazz's owner, Larry H. Miller, initiated conceptual design meetings and negotiations to construct a larger arena. Sumitomo Trust and the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City agreed to help fund a new multi-purpose arena that would also house the Utah Jazz. ... [Read More]
