Utah History To Go - Logan
On 6 June 1859 a small group of Mormon settlers sent to Cache Valley by Brigham Young surveyed a fort site near the banks of the Logan River and began harvesting logs for houses. By the middle of the month, the first drawing for parcels of land took place. A second group plowed land and planted three acres of wheat on 10 June on an area called "the island." They constructed two rows of cabins facing each other, patterning the settlement after Salt Lake City, including streets wide enough for several vehicles to pass each other. By March 1860 there were 100 houses in the settlement, which was named Logan after an early trapper, Ephraim Logan. The city was incorporated on 17 January 1866 and Alvin Crockett was elected Logan's first mayor. ... [Read More]

Utah State Centennial Tartan - Public Pioneer
*The first American of Scottish descent who left a permanent mark upon Utah was Ephraim Logan. Logan was a mountain man who visited Cache Valley in northern Utah, and named the river that ran through the valley after his ancestral Scottish clan in 1824. When the settlers came to Cache Valley the settlement was called after the Logan River. A year after Logan's visit, Hudson Bay Company Cmdr., (out of Fort Vancouver, Oregon) Peter Skene Ogden, a fur trapper, and great explorer of the West, came to a place he called New Valley. He had in his company 70 trappers with wives and children. Ogden wrote, "I only wish we could find a dozen spots equal to it (later called Ogden)." Also in 1824, came another Scott explorer, Charles MacKay, also of the mountain-man genre. He recorded in his journal, of standing on a mountain and seeing the Great Salt Lake. ... [Read More]

Project scope includes replacement of three bridges (at the mouth of Logan Canyon in Logan, Stokes Nature Center and Right Hand Fork) and the construction of a pedestrian underpass at the mouth of Logan Canyon. A contractor has yet to be selected for this project. Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2005 and continue through Fall 2006. The bridges will be constructed one half at a time, resulting in one-way traffic over the bridges. Temporary canyon closures may be necessary throughout the duration of the project; however, UDOT and the contractor will strive to minimize impacts by scheduling these closures during nighttime and off-peak traffic hours. Construction phasing will be determined when a contractor is selected. ... [Read More]

Logan, Utah : About Us
The mision of the ARS Research Units at Logan, Utah has three areas of emphasis: (1) To investigate poisonous plants, their toxins and tertogens; (2) To broaden the genetic base and enhance the merits and biodiversity of plants for rangelands and pastures; (3) To develop non-Apis bee pollinators of major agricultural crops, understand their management, biology and the control of associated diseases. Poisonous plant research will establish the mechanisms by which toxic plants cause injury to animals. It isolates, determines the structures of toxins and teratogens and prepares their analogs. The effects of environment and plant parts on toxin concentrationare established. Plant genetic improvement research of native and introduced species provides an array of new grasses, legumes and forbs for upgrading semiarid lands throughout the West. New plant materials are developed to meet the specific needs of conservation, restoration and reclamation, recreation, and forage for livestock and wil ... [Read More]
