Utah History To Go - Home Industry 20th-Century Style
Home industry—in Utah the two words almost immediately bring to mind the pioneer era and the exhortations of Brigham Young to produce locally as many of life's necessities as possible. No doubt the Mormon leader would have applauded the tub-thumping of the Utah Manufacturers Association (UMA) 70 years later. During 1917 the Utah Payroll Builder, official publication of the UMA, celebrated the wide variety of Utah products. Slogans at the top of many pages urged readers to support local businesses: See That a Utah Concern's Name Is on the Label, Let's All Join in Buying Utah Made Goods, Try the Utah Made Goods Next Time, Utah's Industries Grow Through Your Patronage, Utah Made Goods Are Superior, and Farewell to Every Dollar Sent Away from Home. ... Utah History To Go - The Gardo House
The home had its beginning when, during the last years of his life, Brigham Young, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon church) perceived a need for a place where he could receive official callers and entertain the dignitaries who traveled great distances to see him. He selected a lot on the corner directly south of his Beehive House and began construction in 1873. The Mormon prophet was fond of naming his homes, and one source claims that he borrowed the name Gardo from a favorite Spanish novel. 2 ... [Read More]

Utah History To Go - Flour Mills
Replacing the old area mills were two up-to-date facilities designed for commercial production using steam rollers. Investors strategically built these new mills adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in northern Davis County. The builders were a younger generation, most of them successful commercial farmers or livestock growers. Ephraim P. Ellison, H. Gibsons, and others organized the first of these new-generation plants in 1890. Their business was known as the Layton Roller Mills. It was located just south of the Farmer's Union on Layton's Main Street. By 1903 the mill was the most productive in the state; in a twenty-four-hour day, it could turn out 440 sacks of flour. ... Utah History To Go - Imperial Zion: The British Occupation Of Utah
It is difficult to make a precise assessment of the financial contribution these skilled craftsmen made to Utah's development. But, trained in another land as they were, they brought with them indirectly the "wealth" Britain had invested in their training. Whether it was in herding sheep, making rope, tanning leather, mining coal, or manufacturing bicarbonate of soda, these immigrants made positive material contributions to the development of their new home with a minimum investment from their adopted homeland. ... Utah History To Go - Utahns of Achievement
The strength of Phyllis McGinley's appeal was her support of the housewife and the home at a time when many women were entering the job market. Her book Sixpence in Her Shoe (1964) was written as a direct response to Betty Friedan's best-selling book The Feminine Mystique (1963) which proposed the idea that intelligent educated woman could never find true happiness by staying home. Sixpence stated an alternate philosophy, one that McGinley's own life had been based on, that educated women could fit happily into the framework of the home. Sixpence sold over 100,000 copies and remained on the best-seller list for several months. ... [Read More]
