Board members also passed a recommendation to the Utah legislature that the DWR be provided with additional funding to manage wolves and to mitigate for the impacts wolves may have on Utah's wildlife. ...

An example of mitigation might be additional funding given to the DWR if the agency tried to reestablish a bighorn sheep population and the success of the transplant was affected by wolves. The additional funding would allow the agency to try the transplant again. ... [Read More]

JOHNSON RESERVOIR - Little fishing pressure. Abundant chubs, suckers and small perch are a problem here. A limited number of tiger muskies have been stocked in Johnson Reservoir. A number of them have been in the reservoir long enough to produce some large fish. If you catch one, please contact the nearest DWR office with some details. ...

Note: Several of the fishing reports were not updated last week. Our regional conservation outreach managers were all involved in a national conference that the DWR hosted for other state wildlife and natural resource agencies. Things will be back to normal this week. ... [Read More]

The goal of the DWR is to maintain a management program for CWD that provides the public with factual information, provides early detection, and prevents spread of the disease. The DWR has actively participated in CWD management by working to prevent infection, eliminate infection, and perform maintenance activities in areas where CWD has been found. ...

The DWR has implemented an aggressive surveillance plan to target deer in specific units throughout the state. As stated above, CWD infection in the endemic areas of Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska are found in less than one percent of wild elk populations and one to 15 percent of wild deer populations. Therefore, testing strategies target deer and not elk; although, the DWR will test any deer or elk exhibiting clinical symptoms of CWD. Hunters who have harvested a deer in one of the CWD sampling units located on the map, may take their animal to the nearest regional office or wildlife check station to have a tissue sample removed for testing. To qualify for testing, the animal must be a deer older than one year old, must not have been dead longer than three days, and the head of the animal must not have been frozen at any time. Hunters may view the results on the Internet after allowing four weeks for processing. ... [Read More]

The DWR also will recommend decreasing the number of doe deer and cow elk permits available for hunts in Utah this fall. ...

"The number of young people who are becoming hunters has been declining for years, and we're concerned about that trend," said Jim Karpowitz, big game coordinator for the DWR. "Hunters and anglers provide most of the funding to manage wildlife that everyone in Utah gets to enjoy. As the number of hunters continues to drop, the amount of funding to manage Utah's wildlife will continue to drop too. ... [Read More]

Volunteers from the DWR's Dedicated Hunter program will clean and process the fish on June 18 and place them in a freezer at the site. Beginning June 20, licensed anglers and youth under 14 years old (youth are not required to possess a fishing license until they're 14 years old) can then come to the DWR's Springville office and receive one bag of fish per eligible person. DWR Director Jim Karpowitz has signed an executive order allowing the donation of eight trout per person (double the regular possession limit) for this project. For law enforcement purposes, a receipt will be given with each bag of fish that explains the emergency donation program. ... [Read More]
