2364, EASTERN BEAR LAKE FAULT
The fault is marked by multiple fault scarps in Quaternary deposits atthe base of a steep escarpment of Mesozoic rocks on the east side of BearLake.   Seismic-reflection data show thatthe lake floor, and reflectors within the Neogene sediments, dip eastward intothe Eastern Bear Lake fault (Skeen, 1975).   Total throw of the top of the Eocene Wasatch Formation is about 1.5 kilometersat the north end of Bear Lake (McCalpin, 1990).   Displacement from the last two earthquakes on the fault at onesite is 8.3 meters (5.6 meters from the penultimate event, 2.6+ meters from themost recent event).   Minimum estimatesof paleoearthquake magnitudes (M s ) vary between surface-faultingearthquakes (which were associated with variable surface displacements) from6.9 to 7.4.   The 32‑kilometerlength of the southern section yields an estimate of M s 7.1. ... Sea-Floor Mapping Goes Inland, to Bear Lake in Utah and Idaho
A team of researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)'s Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP) used sea-floor-mapping technology to map the floor of Bear Lake (Utah and Idaho) in September. Bear Lake is a medium-size (11 by 34 km) lake that occupies an active half-graben at the boundary between the Basin and Range Province and the Colorado Plateau. The lake is important as a recreational resource, a fisheries habitat, and a source of water for irrigation and power generation. ... [Read More]

Many anglers assume that the best fishing at Bear Lake during this time of year is in deep areas of the lake where the water is cooler. Some anglers are catching fish (cutthroat trout and lake trout) by trolling lures off of downriggers in some of these areas and by jigging with cisco-baited tubes right on the bottom, but the action was slower than for those anglers fishing on the surface. The flotsam lines are not related to water depth, so you can still be fishing right on the surface in water that may be 100 feet or deeper. It pays to experiment with different techniques, depths, and lures, especially on Bear Lake, until you find a combination that works the best for you. Surface water temperature is 64 degrees. ... Utah State Parks and Recreation
Bear Lake State Park is nestled high in the Rocky Mountains on the Utah-Idaho border. The cool, Caribbean-blue waters of Bear Lake are ideal for waterskiing, swimming, scuba diving, and sailing. Anglers enjoy year-round fishing for cutthroat, mackinaw, cisco, and whitefish. Bear Lake State Park offers three recreation areas, including Rendezvous Beach, Bear Lake Marina, and East Beach. The park also hosts many annual events, such as a Mountain Man Rendezvous and Bear Lake Raspberry Days. ... [Read More]

Other fish found in Bear Lake include the yellow perch, Utah sucker, Utah chub, carp, green sunfish, redside shiner, speckled dace and occasionally brook trout that have migrated downstream from tributaries. Yellow perch are a well recognized sportfish and, although they are usually prolific in the waters they are found in Utah, they are found in relatively small numbers in Bear Lake. During high water years perch fishing can be quite productive through the ice and right after ice-out near the Bear River Inlet structure, Lifton pumping station, and at the Utah State Park marina. Perch are usually caught with night crawlers on light tackle. Utah suckers and Utah chubs are both native to Bear Lake. Utah suckers comprise a large portion of the fish biomass. They are part of Bear Lake's natural ecosystem and do not become management problems in Bear Lake as in other waters. Utah chubs occupy shoreline areas and serve as a forage species for cutthroat trout and lake trout. Carp migrate into ... [Read More]

Utah History To Go - Great Salt Lake
Trappers explored the region of the Great Salt Lake, beginning with Robert Stewart, who was at Bear Lake in 1812 but apparently did not visit the salt lake. Later trappers visited the lake, but is unclear who was first. Jim Bridger reportedly saw the lake in 1824. In 1826 a group of four trappers from the Rocky Mountain Fur Company spent twenty-four days circumnavigating the lake, seemingly putting to rest the idea of a river flowing from it to the Pacific Ocean. In spite of this, the Frémont expedition of 1843-44 visited the Great Salt Lake in 1843 and searched for a river flowing west to the Pacific, finally concluding that the lake indeed occupied part of a great basin which had no drainage to the sea. ...
