Ogden City: Frequently Asked Questions - Frequently Asked Questions
In 2001, the City went through a large public involvement process to develop goals and strategies to guide the city in the future. Through this process a common vision was created which is called Involve Ogden (link: http://www.ogdencity.com/index.cfm/plan.involvepdfs ) which is the general plan of Ogden City. This plan outlines the future of Ogden City and can give you a sense of what Ogden wants to see happen in the future. More specific plans are developed for each area and they are called community plans. Community plans are a part of the Involve Ogden Plan though the community plans are related to a specific area and are on- going in their development. The community plans use the Involve Ogden plan for direction and then through a series of meetings, with the community which is being planned for, takes those ideas and develops the community plan. ... Utah History To Go - Ogden Defeats SLC in a War of Wheels
As Rishel—who had ridden parts of the relay himself and then sped ahead by train—waited anxiously in Ogden for the cyclists and packet to appear, Ogden wheelmen had indeed hijacked the packet and chosen their own route toward Echo Canyon. On August 29, Rishel impatiently scanned the road at the corner of Washington and Thirteenth Street, searching the horizon in vain for the expected rider. The transfer was hours overdue. The crowd, too, wondered what had happened. Only a few prankish Ogden wheelmen and boosters knew that the Ogden boys were victorious in scooping Salt Lake. Rishel telegraphed along the route without gaining any information as to the courier's whereabouts. At last the truth became known when the manager at the telegraph office, under duress, gave Rishel the facts. Eleven miles north of Ogden a courier had carried his bike and the packet over the foot of the mountain, then sped up Ogden Canyon to Huntsville and over the mountains to Echo Canyon. It was a cunning plan. T ... [Read More]

Utah History To Go - Marie Ogden
Authorities revived the case and demanded a death certificate be signed. Ogden refused, insisting that Peshak was not dead. Officers searched the Home of Truth but failed to find the body. Finally, Tommy Robertson, a former follower of Ogden came forward. He declared that two months after the original investigation Ogden had ordered him to wrap the body in two sheets and a thin mattress and carry it to a dry wash nearby. Ogden had supervised as Robertson built a pyre of wood and laid the mummy upon it. He soaked the whole mass with oil and lit it on fire. His testimony ended the investigation and nearly ended Marie Ogden's Home of Truth. Following this debacle only a handful of members persisted in the commune, feebly continuing to build the kingdom. ... [Read More]

ATSDR - PHA - Ogden Defense Depot, Ogden, Weber County, Utah
5. There are no plans at this time to remove debris from the Ogden Nature Center. Areas withsuspected debris or visible debris should be restricted and marked such as with signs. ATSDR,also, recommends that DDOU and the Ogden Nature Center collaborate when future pond sitesare selected and that subsurface surveys be conducted in any areas scheduled for excavation. Using those surveys to guide land management decisions should prevent human exposure. ...

3. A potential pathway may be associated with Burial Site 1 and other suspected burial areas onthe grounds of the Ogden Nature Center (formerly part of DDOU). Drum remnants are visible inseveral areas at the nature center, but in areas that are infrequently used. Anelectromagnetometer survey of Burial Site 1 showed subsurface anomalies, possibly indicatingadditional burial areas or other ground disturbances. Several areas have been excavated to createponds. None of the ponds were constructed in known or suspected disposal areas. One test pit(TP-1) and one borehole sample (SB-27) were collected from the Ogden Nature Center nearBurial Site 1. Undisturbed soil was encountered in the test pit, indicating that the excavation wasnot in the burial site. The sample was analyzed for BNAEs, pesticides/PCBs, and metals. Nosoil contamination was detected to a sampling depth of 6.5 feet. If contamination isencountered, people who could be exposed to contaminants through incidental ingestion of andd ... [Read More]

I-15 Corridor Plan - Home Page
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), in conjunction with the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) and Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC), have initiated a corridor planning study for I-15. The purpose of this project is to develop, evaluate, and recommend transportation improvements in the 13-mile long I-15 Corridor between 200 North in Kaysville and 31st Street in Ogden and from the Great Salt Lake on the west to US89 on the east. A 12-month long corridor planning study will identify transportation needs in the area and outline short- and long-term transportation improvements through the Year 2030. The project team will develop a corridor plan that takes into consideration items such as highways, principal surface streets, transit, and non-motorized transportation options. ... [Read More]

Utah History To Go - Ogden
The completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 quickly changed Ogden from a small agricultural community to a major transportation center. Accordingly, the "Junction City" of the Union and Central Pacific railroads experienced great growth in diversity, commerce, and industry. The majority of the Weber County's 1,807 residents lived in Ogden in 1860. By 1870, Ogden's population increased to 3,127; in 1880 to 6,069; and by 1890 reached 12,889 residents. Stimulated by the diversity of its population, Ogden's mayoral election of non-Mormon Fred J. Kiesel in 1889 was the first breakthrough in Utah's Mormon-dominated politics. ... [Read More]

Utah History To Go - Peter Skene Ogden
Ogden continued to lead Hudson's Bay Company brigades; however, not until his 1828-29 expedition did he again enter the Utah area. This journey brought Ogden south from Fort Nez Perce to what trappers called "Ogden's" or "Mary's" River, later named the Humbolt by John C. Frémont. Pushing east, Ogden's brigade proceeded to present-day Lucin, Utah, then north along the east side of the Grouse Creek Range. The expedition then proceeded eastward across Park Valley and camped near Ten Mile Spring. Ogden indicates that at this spring he had his first view of the Great Salt Lake; whether this meant his first view during this expedition or his first time ever is uncertain. After observing the lake, Ogden continued north toward Soda Springs, then south along the Bear River through Cache Valley to where the Malad River joins the Bear. After trapping the area, Ogden's brigade returned to Ten Mile Spring, skirting the north end of the Great Salt Lake and retracing their route o ... [Read More]

Utah History To Go - Ogden
The threat of war and the coming of World War II brought a renewed significance to Ogden as a transportation hub and center of government agencies and war industries. An aggressive Ogden Chamber of Commerce convinced the government to build Hill Air Base in the Ogden area in 1938. During the war years, Ogden was considered a safe interior area with an excellent system of rail connections to move needed war materials to the war zones. As a result, the Naval Supply Depot was built in Clearfield and the Utah General Depot in Ogden; the United States Forest Service Regional Office also was located in Ogden. German and Italian prisoners of war were interned in camps in the Ogden area. In its heyday during World War II as many as 119 passenger trains passed through Ogden every twenty-four-hour period. ...
