Meat Processing - Utah Correctional Industries Meat Processing started at the prison in 1962 when cows and hogs were raised at the prison farm to supply meat and milk for the prisoners. In the 1980s UCI took over the operation and found it to be more profitable to purchase slaughtered beef and turkey and then butcher and process the meat to suit the prisons' needs. This meat processing is regulated very closely and is inspected on a daily basis by Federal inspectors. ... State Energy Program: Utah Taps Geothermal Reservoir under Prison Utah discovered an unexpected underground bonanza last year. It's a geothermal reservoir—an aquifer of hot water at about 185°F—about 1,000 feet below the Wasatch Unit of the Utah State Prison in Draper. Working with the Utah Energy Office, the Department of Corrections entered into an energy services contract with Johnson Controls, Inc., in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to provide heat and hot water to the facility. ...
