"Oh, Ranger!" ("Oh, Ranger!") Ranger Joe Douglas was crossing Yellowstone Lake onskis in the dead of winter. He came to a place where the snow was blownoff the ice. Skis are of no use on the ice, so Doug unstrapped them andcarried them over his shoulders while he walked across the ice. In anunwary moment, he plunged through an air-hole into the icy water. Theskis bridged the hole and undoubtedly saved his life. Clinging to them,Doug cautiously pulled himself from the water and trudged on, his wetclothes frozen stiff about his body. Reaching the shore, he dug throughfour feet of snow, located some wood, built a fire, undressed, and stoodthere naked while his clothes dried by the blaze. "It's a wonder you didn't freeze, Doug," someonesaid, when the ranger told his story. "Naw, it wasn't cold," he retorted. "It was one ofthe warmest days of the winteronly 'bout seven below zero!" "Oh, Ranger!" ("Oh, Ranger!") One day a local celebrity from an eastern city wassmitten with the urge to write his name upon the cone of Old Faithful, aplace where the name would endure for several years before the geysercould eliminate it by natural processes. This man was caught red-handedby a ranger who arrested him. He was offered the choice of mixing upsome soapsuds and scrubbing the name off the cone or going before theUnited States Commissioner for prosecution. He sputtered considerablyabout his rights, but finally decided to use the soapsuds, influencedlargely by the fact that if he appeared before the judge and were fined, his name would be in the papers and he would become celebrated in amanner that did not appeal to him. Nevertheless, it was humiliating tohave to scrub a geyser cone before a large and not too friendlyaudience, and before the job was done he was angry all through. He cameto headquarters to protest about the tyranny of the rangers. "It's about what you'd expect from these rangers," hesaid. ... [Read More]
