Interior Activity & Accomplishments FY 2003 Land and Water Conservation Fund - Matagorda Park & Preserve: L&WCF assisted grant amount - $2,000,000: Matagorda Bay Nature Park is a unique 1,600-acre park and preserve dedicated to providing recreation, education, preservation, and economic benefit to the region. The nature park is at the mouth of the Colorado River on the Matagorda Peninsula . It has about 2 miles of Gulf of Mexico and river frontage and hundreds of acres of fragile coastal marshes and dunes. It is the location of one of the best birding areas in the Nation. LCRA acquired the property in 2001 as part of its commitment to preserve unique natural resources for future generations and to provide hands-on science education as well as recreation and nature tourism opportunities. The proposed Phase 1 development includes; learning center, RV sites, a pavilion, two fishing piers, nature trail, roads, parking, and shower/restroom facilities. Interior Activity & Accomplishments The National Park Service's Federal Lands to Parks Program completed a public benefit conveyance of a 1.6 acre parcel containing an arts and craft center to the City and County of Denver in 2002. The facility, which was renovated by the City in 1998 under a lease, provides unique recreation opportunities to residents of established neighborhoods in east Denver and new communities being established at the former Air Force base. The craft center parcel is the final of three parcels at Lowry previously transferred to the city for park and recreation use, totaling over 100 acres. The Parks and Recreation Department is currently advancing plans to expand the 9,690 square foot facility into a full service community center using available local park bond funds. The Federal Lands to Parks Program coordinated the transfer of the property with the Air Force Base Conversion Agency and the City and County of Denver Department of Parks and Recreation. ... Enforcing the ADA: A Status Report, October - December 1998 -- The Departmententered into an agreement resolving a complaint brought by an individualwhose two children, both of whom are deaf/blind and have cerebral palsy,were allegedly denied access to the skating rink during a birthday partyat a facility operated by United Skates of America in Indianapolis, Indiana.The complainant alleged that he was told by the manager that his childrenwere not allowed on the skating rink floor, even with their father's assistance,and that the manager refused to set aside a time when the children, andother people with disabilities, could skate. United Skates agreed to adopta policy of nondiscrimination that will allow complete access to the skatingrink for a person with a disability unless, after the access has been allowed,an individualized assessment shows that participation by the individualwould create a direct threat to the health and safety of others.
