When hazardous chemicals accidentally or deliberately enter the environment,they can produce harmful effects in all living things -- plants, wildlife, fish,and people.  Sources of contaminants affecting the natural resources ofnorthTexas  include oil spills affecting wetland areas and dependent wildlife,past industrial discharges of contaminants such as PCBs and dioxins thatcontinue to make fish unsafe for wildlife and human consumption, and formerwide-spread use of pesticides (such as DDT -- which nearly exterminated the baldeagle -- and that remains in the environment).  The ArlingtonField Office'sEnvironmental Contaminants (EC) Program operates according to the regulationsand guidelines established in the ComprehensiveEnvironmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA/Superfund) , OilPollution Act (OPA) , EndangeredSpecies Act (ESA) , MigratoryBird Treaty Act (MBTA) , CleanWater Act (CWA) , and NationalEnvironmental Policy Act (NEPA) .  The go ... Federal Permits and Projects
Through project planning activities and the NEPA process,the Arlington Field Office reviews projects planned by all Federal agencies andmakes recommendations to mitigate adverse environmental impacts to fish andwildlife resources.  The benefits of successful environmental coordinationinclude favorable resolution of natural resource conflicts, timely coordinationof our activities pertaining to NEPA compliance, and more informed decisionmaking.  The Arlington Field Office seeks to protect wetlands, uplands, rivercorridors, and deepwater habitats by ensuring that Federal projects (e.g.,navigation, flood control, economic development) are designed to mitigatepotential impacts on them.  We also attempt to protect rare and declining speciesand their habitats before actions such as Federal listings for endangered orthreatened species become necessary. ... Education/Outreach
Education and Outreach at the Arlington Field Office involves the loaning outof educational resource trunks and public presentations.  The"Endangered Species Trunk" contains numerous hands-on materials(including confiscated endangered animal hides, tusks, etc.), videos, pamphlets,and curriculum guides related to the topic of endangered species and theirconservation.  The "Conservation Trunk" features items useful forthe teaching of wildlife conservation/environmental education in general with anemphasis on wetlands.  These two trunks may be checked-out by any localschool, scout troops, or other interested groups or individuals.  ArlingtonField Office staff biologists give presentations to local conservation groups,colleges, high schools, etc. on topics such as threatened and endangeredspecies, conservation of natural resources on private lands, careers in thebiological field, and other topics related to fish and wildlife conservation ingeneral.& ...
