State Correctional Education Programs Like other adult educators, correctional education instructors participate in a number of professional development activities. Generally they are not provided, however, with significant pre-service training on teaching in a correctional institution. In fact, a needs assessment study of correctional education instructors in Virginia found that “traditional teacher preparatory programs emphasize content knowledge, but do little to prepare educators to the reality of teaching in correction.” 73 Instructors often do have the opportunity to participate in correctional training arranged for correctional officers by the state’s correctional training academy and the institution’s correctional training coordinator. "…we are combining several corrections into one notice, and it will take some research and coordination to ensure that the corrections are technically accurate and legally sufficient.
