The Texas - The United States Mint Texas comes from the Indian word "tejas," meaning friends or allies, and appropriately Texas's motto is "Friendship." Probably the two most recognized symbols of Texas are its unique shape and the lone star that is represented on the State flag. The Texas flag design was approved in 1839 to symbolize the Republic of Texas and was adopted as the State flag in 1845. The simple design of a lone star and three bold stripes of red, white and blue represent bravery, purity and loyalty, respectively. Texas is the only state to have had six different flags fly over its land -- Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States of America and the United States of America. ... [Read More]
Today in History: June 14 Interviews in American Life Histories, 1936-1940 contain entertaining examples of the American vernacular. A search on Flag Day retrieves the following conversation between Mr. Richmond and Mr. Davis: "Why ain't you got your flag out?" says Mr. Richmond, entering the gas station in which he spends much of his time these days. "You know today is flag day, don't you?" "I guess the boss forgot to buy a flag, George," says Mr. Davis, the station attendant. "And even if we had one, we ain't got no place to put it." Mr. Richmond: "That's a fine state of affairs, that is. Here they are tryin' to bring home to you people the fact that you're livin' in one of the few countries where you can draw a free breath and you don't even know it. You're supposed to have flags out all this week. Don't you know that? This is flag day and this is flag week. Where's your patriotism?" ... [Read More]

State Seal of Texas Senator Jones mistakenly wrote that the proposed flag would display the national arms. That flag, as proposed and later adopted, featured only a single star rather than the proposed national arms, and it still flies today over Texas as the famous Lone Star Flag. ... No one knows who first suggested the addition of the olive and live oak branches to the seal, but the Mexican national seal, which also contains wreaths of olive and oak, was the likely source. Senator William H. Wharton introduced a bill in the Texas Senate on December 28, 1838, to modify both the Texas seal and flag. The bill was referred to a committee chaired by Senator Oliver Jones, and President Mirabeau B. Lamar on January 25, 1839, approved a substitute bill offered by Jones. Jones' substitute bill contained the same design for the seal and flag originally proposed in Wharton's bill. Peter Krag executed an official rendition of the seal as well as the national flag. President Lamar approved Krag's art, which is attached to the act and currently in the custody of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. ... [Read More]

Where No Flag Has Gone Before 10. It is uncertain who manufactured the flag that was deployed by the Apollo 11 crew. According to a NASA Press Release of 3 July 1969, "the Stars and Stripes to be deployed on the Moon was purchased along with several others made by different manufacturers at stores in the area around the Manned Spacecraft Center near Houston. In order to attach the flag properly to its aluminum staff it was necessary to remove the binding and labels. For this reason the name of the manufacturer cannot be determined." (NASA Press Release 69-83E, 3 July 1969, on file at the JSC History Office). In his book, "All We Did Was Fly to the Moon," (Gainesville, FL: Whispering Eagle Press, 1988), p. 121, Dick Lattimer states that the flags that went to the moon were made by Annin & Co. Randy Beard, Sr., of Annin contacted the Public Affairs Office at NASA Headquarters regarding the flag shortly after the moon landing.
