Hydrology Information for east Tennessee, southwest Virginia and extreme southwest North Carolina Hydrology in east Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and extreme southwest North Carolina ... East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia: February 14-23, 2003 ... Hydrology is the study of water on the surface and under the surface of the earth and in the hydrologic cycle . In east Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and southwest North Carolina, there is often more water on the surface of the earth than can be conveniently run off into the oceans. In the 18th through early 20th centuries, this region was dangerously flood prone, and development of large cities came slowly, compared to other areas of the country. The development of hydrologic science in the early 20th century enabled dams to be built along the Tennessee River and its tributaries that were capable of partially controlling the flooding, and provided electricity to underdeveloped areas. Growth since then has been tremendous in many locations. Unfortunately, much of the growth has been in relatively low, flat locations (pretty hard to find around these parts!) that often tend to be more flood prone than other places. ... [Read More]
TDEC: East Tennessee Environmental Conference Come join us for the 4th Annual East Tennessee Environmental Conference. This year is expected to be very exciting as together we explore ways of "Subscribing to a Healthy Environment". Networking will be the key as we unlock the doors of opportunity in the fields of Health, Economic Development and Environment. Knowledgeable speakers from local, state and national organizations will be presenting progressive information on topics such as crisis communication, storm water, indoor and outdoor air quality, health tracking and smart growth. The venue is an environmental depiction as Eastman Lodge is located in Kingsport, Tennessee nestled at the foot of pristine Bays Mountain. We will continue to educate future generations in conjunction with the conference by partnering with Bays Mountain Park to host some local elementary students for educational programs. TDEC: East Tennessee Environmental Conference Owing to the abundant karst (limestone areas characterized by caves, sinkholes and springs) in Middle and East Tennessee, it is critical for the general public to be made aware of the unique concerns of karst and the delicate balance that must be maintained if karst areas are to be protected from pollution. This video provides an elementary overview of the geologic conditions and environmental consequences of living in karst areas. Video intended for 4th grade and above. ... [Read More]
External > :. About Us > East Tennessee Technology Park ( DNN 3.1.0 ) The East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) is a compilation of resource-rich industrial facilities which have their beginnings in the Manhattan Project during World War II. The site's original mission was to enrich uranium in the uranium 235 isotope for use in atomic weapons and subsequently for use in the commercial nuclear power industry. The plant was permanently shut down in 1987 and in 1996, Reindustrialization went into effect with efforts focusing on restoration of the environment, decontamination and decommissioning of the facilities, and management of legacy wastes. Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC is the environmental management contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Operations Office that is performing this cleanup work, with completion slated at ETTP for 2008. The goal is to create a brownfields industrial park known as Heritage Center under coordination of the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee. Also, near the ETTP site is Horiz ... The Geologic Story of the Ocoee River US Highway 64 follows the Ocoee River through the gorge, east of the town of Cleveland, Tennessee. Many interesting rocks can be seen from the highway in roadcuts and in the river bed starting near Ocoee Dam No. 1 (Parksville Dam). East of Ocoee Dam No. 3, the Ocoee River turns south and Highway 64 continues east to Ducktown. ... The Great Smoky fault intersects the Earth's surface near Ocoee Dam No. 1 (Parksville Dam). Faults and folds formed when older rocks were shoved over younger rocks during a continental collision more than 240 million years ago. The fault marks the boundary between two physiographic provinces: the Valley and Ridge province to the west and the Blue Ridge province to the east. Landforms are different on either side of the fault because rocks on the east side are more resistant to weathering and erosion than the younger rocks to the west. The fault is no longer active. ...
